Just a quick one today to let you know that I won't be posting for a while. For those who don't know I'm really close to completing an MA in English Literature and the final hurdle is my dissertation, which is 15,000 words of pure torture, and due in in 17 days. So I really have to get my head down and just get on with it. I did want to keep blogging in the mean time but it's just not possible at the moment. I will try and keep you guys updated and I will try to get my August Favourites posted in August but honestly I just need to take the pressure off myself and get my dissertation done and handed in. Once that's all done and dusted I'll be back and it'll be business as usual.

I hope you guys don't think I'm abandoning you and I really wish I didn't have to stop, even for a little while but sometimes life happens. I'm hoping to be back to normal in 3 weeks time but until then follow me on twitter, instagram, facebook, bloglovin', snapchat - search lolarocknroses - and pinterest for updates.

The Weekly Round Up #3: Snog, Lipstick & Queen Helene

The Weekly Round Up #3: Snog, Lipstick & Queen Helene

Lancôme Gel Éclat Clarifying Cleanser Pearly Foam - £23.00 from Lancôme

I've been using this cleanser for the past week or so and I really like it. It has a really thick, serum like texture that foams when applied to the skin and gets rid of all traces of make up, leaving the skin feeling squeaky clean. I will say it can be quite drying on the skin however nothing that a good moisturiser can't fix.

Natural Collection Moisture Shine Lipstick in Raspberry - £1.99 from Boots

I picked this up in Boots for the ridiculously low price of £1.99 this week and have been wearing it ever since. It's a really pretty, natural looking raspberry pink which is lovely for everyday. It doesn't have the greatest of formulas, it's nicely moisturising but has a lot of slip to it and doesn't last particularly well but even so I like it a lot.

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque - £4.69 for 235ml from Amazon

My skin has been really bad this week, there have been breakouts galore, so I've been using this mask to try and get my skin back to normal and it's worked wonders. I pop it on for 15 - 30 minutes, depending on how bad my skin is,  and let it work it's magic.  It gives the skin a really deep clean and
leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth and looking so much clearer. This is one of my absolute fave clay masks.

Snog Strawberry & Raspberry Frozen Yoghurt - 1.75 for 450 ml from Asda

We've had something of an unexpected heat wave in the UK this weekend, which has made up for the drizzly excuse for a summer we've had so far, normally to combat the heat I eat ice cream but as I'm watching what I eat I've been reaching for Fro-Yo instead. Snog, I hate the name, is the best one I've come across. It's so nice; really creamy but light at the same time and tastes just like ice cream but with no where near the calories of normal ice cream. I love it!

5 YouTubers I'm loving right now

5 YouTubers I'm loving right now
Tuesday 18 August 2015
Read post

You guys know that YouTube is basically my favourite thing ever and I am constantly on the look out for new YouTubers to add to my subscription box. These are the 5 YouTubers I am loving right now.

Jaclyn Hill -  I've been subscribed to Jaclyn Hill since I first really started getting into youtube, in fact I credit this woman for helping me master the smokey eye. Jaclyn Hill I am forever indebted to you! BUT for the last year or so it's like she fell off my radar and then I remembered and I was like HELL YAS I LOVE JACLYN HILL! I'm going to watch every video I've missed in one sitting ( I didn't but the intention was there!) She's amazing. She's funny, her tutorials are incredible and I'm seriously loving her at the moment.

Lana - I mentioned Lana in my first Weekly Round Up (read it here) and I'm still loving her channel. She's very sweet and makes good videos. What's not to like?

Tati AKA Glam Life Guru - So I've been a fan of Tati's for a while now but for some reason or other she's never made it into my daily youtube viewing. Until now. I mean I watched her fairly regularly anyway (woah that sounds creepy!) but recently I've had a whole new level of appreciation for Tati, she goes into so much depth and detail when she reviews make up, which I love, but she's also really open and honest and does some seriously beautiful make up tutorials. She's amazing.

Karlie Kloss - AKA my new youtube obsession. Love. Her.

John Green - Okay so my love of John Green is not exactly secret, nor is my crush on John Green, and I was already a big fan of vlogbrothers - the youtube channel he has with his brother Hank (Hank is also awesome just fyi) - but recently I have discovered the bundle of joy that is List Show on Mental Floss and it is fascinating. Basically on List Show John Green, and sometimes other people, list interesting facts about stuff. It sounds boring  but IT SO ISN'T. I've been putting it on to listen to while I've been writing my dissertation because I find John Green's voice very soothing. Right now I'm listening to him list 30 facts about Chocolate, I mean seriously does it get any better than that?

Those are my 5 youtube obsessions at the moment. Who are yours let me know on twitter, by commenting below or dropping me an email at lolarocknroses@gmail.com. Also follow my instagram, facebook, bloglovin', snapchat - search lolarocknroses - and pinterest for regular updates.

The Weekly Round Up #2: Disney, Lena & Game of Thrones

The Weekly Round Up #2: Disney, Lena & Game of Thrones
Sunday 16 August 2015
Read post
Welcome to my second weekly round up. It's been a bit of a busy one this week, I've spent a lot of time cooped up in the library working on my dissertation, and cursing myself for choosing to do a Masters Degree to begin with. Anyway that's by the by here's what I've been loving this week.

Not that Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham I've been resisting this book for the past couple of weeks, because I've heard how good it is and knew that once I started I wouldn't be able to put it down. I was right. Lena's writing is both hilarious and achingly poignant. It just completely blew me away. It's not only an excellent book but I think it's a really important one as well.

Inside Out Just when you think Pixar might be running out of ideas (Planes... really?) they release Inside Out and it is beyond amazing. With an all star cast featuring some of my absolute faves: Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, Phyllis from The Office, the hypochondriac man from Scrubs. It is hilarious, sweet, heartbreaking and incredible. It made me feel all the feels at once, which I think is kind of the point. I loved it. It is everything!

Game of Thrones So I am WAY late to the party with this one, aren't I always?, but I get it now. GoT is amazeballs. I started it Friday night and got half way through the first season in one sitting because it is so addictive. A 'friend' of mine has already ruined it by texting me a ton of spoilers, which I'm hoping he's made up, but I'm really enjoying it, even if it is a bit heavy on the beheadings.

My song of the week this week is, drumroll please... A Matter of Trust by Billy Joel If you're new round these parts then you won't know that I have the same taste in music as a middle aged man, my Dad to be exact. I love Dad music and Billy Joel's A Matter of Trust definitely falls into this category. It's amazing. I love it! You can listen to it here

HUGE Barry M & Revlon Nail Polish Haul

HUGE Barry M & Revlon Nail Polish Haul
Thursday 13 August 2015
Read post
So I was in Boots, as I frequently am when I have some spare cash, and just couldn't resist the buy one get one half price offer on Barry M nails. As you guys will know Barry M is my favourite for drug store nails. I cannot, nay will not, fault him and his glorious polishes.

The first polishes I picked up were Barry M Gelly Hi Shine Nail Paint in Damson, Guava & Sugar Plum  - £3.99 each or buy one get one half price from Boots.I am a massive fan of the Gelly Hi-Shine formulas, so when I saw they were on offer I knew some more would be making their merry way into my basket. Damson was the first one I reached for, you know I can never resist a blue! The colour of this is really hard to pin point, it's somewhere between a rich sky blue and royal blue, but it is so gorgeous! I've only had it on my nails for a day and have had so many compliments. It is beautiful! And believe it or not I actually have nothing like this in my already ridiculous but ever growing collection. Guava is a repurchase because I used it so much it went all gloopy and had to throw it away. The colour is beautiful, a stunning, blue toned turquoise that I just love. It's one of my favourites. Sugar Plum was next because I physically could not leave without it. This colour, OMG this colour. Sugar Plum is a beautiful purple toned pink and it is just about one of the prettiest polishes I've ever seen. I saw it and just had to have it. So I got it. I will be wearing this a lot. A LOT, a lot. It is B-E-A-U-tiful!

I also picked up two of the Barry M Sunset Curing Nail Paints in Fuchsia Generation and The Way You Make Me Teal - £4.99 each or buy one get one half price from Boots. Now foolishly I forgot to get the topcoat that makes this formula so special so I'll definitely be going back to pick that up before I give my final thoughts. The formula is, supposedly, a souped up version of the Gelly Hi Shines, giving you a salon quality gel manicure from home without the help of a UV lamp, that's right it uses the sun's own UV rays to get that totes profesh finish. I'll let you know once I get my hands on the topcoat BUT I can tell you the colours are stunning, more wintery in tone, but oh so beautiful. Fuchsia Generation, love the name, is a rich, red toned raspberry, perfect for Autumn days and long Winter nights. The Way You Make Me Teal, again love the name, is a muted but beautiful turquoise (shocker!) that I will definitely be getting a lot of use out of. Based on the colours alone I love them. I'll let you know how I get on.

Barry M Speedy Quick Dry Nail Paint in Lap of Honour - £3.99 each or buy one get one half price from Boots. This formula is A-MAY-ZING. Long lasting, thick, creamy and dry in seconds. Blink and you'll miss it. With a revolutionary, yeah I said it!, nail hugging brush even application is an absolute dream. Lap of Honour has been on my list for a while now, a pastel lilac that's both really subtle and very pretty. I can't wait to try it out.

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in Up The Ante & Dealer's Choice  2 for £8 from Boots. These are repurchases, Up the Ante & Dealer's Choice are old favourites of mine (read more about that here), the formula is amazing. I'd even go so far as to say that Revlon's Colorstay Gel Envy is the  BEST formulation on the highstreet. They are beautiful. Long lasting with a beautiful gel-like consistency and finish these have been firm favourites of mine for a long, long time. Up the Ante is a warm purple and the first ever nail polish I ever managed to finish! It is stunning and looks awesome year round. Dealer's Choice is another favourite, another turquoise (I have a problem!), this one has a really subtle sheen of silver glitter running through it. There was a time when I was alternating between these two because they're amazing!

Have you tried any of these? If not what polishes will you be adding to your collection? Bedside Beauty

Bedside Beauty
Tuesday 11 August 2015
Read post
I don't know about you but when it comes to taking my make up off I can be super lazy, and I prefer to do it in bed. So I have to keep all my lotions and potions handy. For today's post I thought I would give you guys a sneak peek at the beauty bits I keep on my bedside table.

No 7 Beautiful Skin Eye Make Up Remover - £8.50 from Boots This isn't my favourite eye make up remover, nothing beats DHC Cleansing Oil, but it gets the job done. It's a bi-phase formula that easily removes waterproof mascara and eyeliner, however it does feel quite greasy which I don't like and it does pull on the skin quite a bit but like I said it gets the job done.

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water - 400ml for £3.33 (on offer) from Boots I have ranted and raved about Garnier's Micellar Water till the cows came home, went to bed and told me to keep the noise down. I love it. Especially when it comes in these uber-cute handbag sizes. Simply put it's a really nice cleanser, it gently removes all traces of make up and feels really refreshing on the skin. Speaking of refreshing...

Olay Essentials Refreshing Toner - £2.89 from Boots I have really sensitive skin so I have to be so careful with what I put on my skin. I've found some toners to be too harsh for my skin but this one is really mild and refreshing on the skin whilst getting rid of any remaining traces of make up/dirt and oil. It also smells quite nice which is always a bonus.

Olay Essentials Beauty Fluid for Sensitive Skin - £5.99 from Boots (not pictured) Olay's Beauty Fluid is my favourite drug store moisturiser. It's really light weight and absorbs into the skin so easily leaving my skin feeling soft and hydrated. It's my go to moisturiser for when my skin is acting up because it doesn't clog my pores or make my skin feel greasy. It's a really nice moisturiser.

Rose & Co Patisserie De Bain Sweet as Cherry Pie Hand Cream - £3.99 from Superdrug This hand cream is all kinds of dreamy. It's a really sweet smelling hand cream that keeps my poor, hand sanitiser abused paws in good nick. The packaging is beautiful, that red gingham is adorable, and it smells beautiful.

Witch Naturally Clear Blemish Stick - £2.59 from Boots This is my favourite targeted blemish treatment. I like to keep it handy as I like to I dot it on to any offending blemishes before bed so it can get to work overnight. Witch Hazel is a natural astringent that dries up spots and breaks down any excess oils and pesky spot causing bacteria without being too harsh on the skin.  It can be a bit drying but other than that it's actually quite gentle. I love it.

Blistex Daily Lip Conditioner - £2.69 from Boots Another favourite, this lip balm is so moisturising. I put a layer on my lips last thing at night and can still feel it working it's magic the next morning. It's a thick, vaseline like texture that absorbs into the lips really quickly and makes them feel so nourished and super soft, with the added bonus of smelling like mint and vanilla. It's magic in a teeny little pot. I love it.

This Works Sleep Balm - £12.00 from This Works It's no secret round these parts that I'm a rubbish sleeper,  its well documented. Now I don't know if this actually works or if theres something of a placebo effect at play here, either way This Works Sleep Balm does help me get a better nights sleep. When I first got it I wasn't impressed (read more about that here) but since then I've found that the scent is really calming and soothes me into a better nights sleep.  I just dab it on my pulse points and under my nose and relaaaaaax.

The Body Shop Deep Sleep Dreamy Pillow & Body Mist (not available online but I think might still be available in store.) I've been using this spray for years and I love it! Like the This Works Sleep Balm it smells amazing, it has an almost citrus-y scent, and really soothes my frazzled, troubled mind. Containing Jujube Date Extract (nope I don't know what that is either) and Chamomile Oil its really calming and helps me to relax and catch some extra shut eye.

The Weekly Round Up #1 Migraines, Nails & Youtube

The Weekly Round Up #1 Migraines, Nails & Youtube
Sunday 9 August 2015
Read post

Welcome to my first ever Weekly Round Up! A run down of all the beauty bits, tv, books, music, youtubers, etc. etc. that I've been loving over the past 7 days. Sort of a mini weekly favourites. So let's get started!

The Great British Bake Off

I can't even tell you how happy I am that GBBO has returned to our screens! I super love it. Mel and Sue, Paul Hollywood's piercing blue eyes, Mary Berry in general,  the relentless but oh so amazing baking puns and, of course, the drama of competitive baking, we all remember 'the bincident!'makes for unmissable viewing! I've already got a bit of a soft spot for Ian, anyone who makes chocolate elephants to decorate a Black Forest Gateau is okay in my books. I also like Mat the Fireman, Tamal and the young Scottish girl Flora. *Spoiler* I was a bit gutted that Stu went first because he had a fantastic hat, and I bet he would have made some really interesting bakes but oh well. Ooh I can't wait for next Wednesday.

Kleenex Cooling Gel Eye Mask

(I couldn't find this exact one online but you can get a similar mask for £6.00 from The Body Shop)

I suffer with migraines and this week I've had one that's really knocked me for six.  I'm still not back to normal yet and it's been a week. They're awful. When one strikes the only thing I can really do is stay in bed, with my black out curtains drawn, wondering how long I can wait before taking more pain killers and whimpering pathetically. One thing that really helps to ease the pain is this mask. Yes I look like a serial killer when I wear it BUT it really helps to ease the tension in my forehead and under my eyes. I just leave it in the fridge for a few hours and then let it work it's cooling magic.

 Lana

I spend pretty much all my spare time on youtube (because I'm a cool kid!) and I'm constantly on the lookout for new youtubers to add to my subscription box. Enter my new youtube favourite Lana! Lana is an American/Spanish youtuber and she is absolutely adorable. She has really good taste in make up and fashion, I have a bit of a style crush on her, and she just seems really nice. I really like her videos. Check out her youtube channel here

Barry M Hi Shine Gelly Nail Paint in Prickly Pear - £3.99 from Barry M

I love Barry M, I've said it before and I'll say it again, he is the undisputed king of high street nails. In particular I'm a really big fan of the Hi-Shine Gelly Formulas, they're long lasting, thick, creamy, easily workable, have decent brushes, leave a gorgeous, shiny, gel-like finish (hence the name) and are opaque within 2 -3 coats. Prickly Pear is a blue toned summery lilac that looks really lovely on. I've been taking it off to put it back on again because it's so pretty.

Nothing Left to Lose by Kari Kimmel

I have had this song on repeat since I heard it on The DUFF soundtrack, it's played over the sad bit just fyi. It's very bittersweet and sad, my favourite kind of song, but oh so good. Listen to it here

Rimmel Hydrating BB Cream 9 in 1 Skin Perfecting Super Make Up in Light: Review

Rimmel Hydrating BB Cream 9 in 1 Skin Perfecting Super Make Up in Light: Review
Thursday 6 August 2015
Read post
Rimmel Hydrating BB Cream 9 in 1 Skin Perfecting Super Make Up in Light - £4.99 from Tesco

Rimmel's Hydrating BB Cream 9 in 1 Skin Perfecting Make Up is a light weight, BB cream that claims to prime, moisturise, protect, cover, conceal, mattify, brighten, smooth the skin and minimise the appearance of pores. It promises a lot and to be honest it doesn't really deliver.

Developed for an Asian market BB Creams were originally designed specifically to target blemishes, protect the skin from further breakouts whilst acting as a base for make up and also whitening the skin. Since coming to the UK the formulations have been redesigned for a Western market and most BB Creams have become glorified tinted moisturisers, and Rimmel's BB Cream is no exception.

I was on the look out for something a bit more light weight that would be gentler on my skin and still give me a decent amount of coverage, because trust me my skin needs it! I'd tried Rimmel's Mattifying BB Cream and had been impressed by both the coverage and longevity it provided. This time I decided to try out the hydrating formula because my skin does tend to be on the drier side of things, but this just doesn't have any coverage. At all.  It's basically a tinted moisturiser but the tint doesn't transfer to the skin. It looks like I'm not wearing anything, not in a 'no make up' make up kind of way but in an actually not wearing a stitch of make up kind of way. I wore this to work one day and people kept asking if I was ill!

Not only is the pigmentation poor and and the coverage really disappointing but the formula overall is lacking. When first out of the tube it looks quite mousse-y, there's a lot of air in there, and the texture is both quite liquid-y but also feels like it's been whipped. Which to me just feels a bit weird. It's also not very hydrating and the entire shade range across the BB Creams is really limited, having just three shades: Light, Medium and Dark. I picked up Light and whilst the colour match is good for me, they could certainly do with adding more for those with darker skin tones. Having said that I think on the right person this could be nice and natural looking but personally I need way more coverage than this BB Cream provides. I was really disappointed. Especially as Rimmel Foundations are some of the best on the High Street and among some of my absolute favourites.

Lucy Bee Extra Virgin Organic Raw Coconut Oil: Review

Lucy Bee Extra Virgin Organic Raw Coconut Oil: Review
Tuesday 4 August 2015
Read post

Recently I've found myself leaping aboard the coconut oil band wagon (read more about that here), only about a year after the rest of the world, and so far I'm loving it. Coconut Oil is the Super-est of all the Super Foods, well that and lemons, which are also fairly super (read more about that here), with a laundry list a mile long of awesome health and beauty benefits, encouraging hair growth and improving the overall condition of the hair being just two of them. So after a recent trim that went about 2 inches awry I felt compelled to add a jar of this to my Amazon basket as soon as humanly possible. I figured if nothing else it was worth a try.

Well since then I have indeed tried it out and I am suitably impressed.  Having been only two weeks I can't see if there has been a noticeable difference in the length of my hair but there certainly has been in an improvement in the condition. My hair is quite dry and is prone to a split end or two, but coconut oil is so moisturising and has left my hair feeling so soft and nourished. My favourite way to use it is as a hot oil treatment. It's really simple to do, just melt a tablespoon of the solid, waxy oil and apply it the mid lengths and ends of wet hair before leaving it on over night. I've been doing this once a week and the difference it has made is quite amazing. My hair is in the best condition it's been in for a long time, due, in part, to having 2 inches of pretty much dead hair chopped off and coconut oil breathing life back into my lengths, and, BONUS it smells like bounties! I am obsessed! This is my new favourite hair treatment.

You can pick up a 500ml jar of Lucy Bee's Extra Virgin Organic Raw Coconut Oil from Amazon for£9.95

Mini Beauty Haul #3

Mini Beauty Haul #3
Sunday 2 August 2015
Read post

Yes another Haul post. I'm sorry guys I hope you're not getting bored yet. Make up, as you guys know, is my favourite thing and I love nothing more than blowing my hard earned pennies on it. Some people collect shoes or stamps, I collect mascaras and eyeshadow pallets, nail polish and lipsticks. Here are the latest additions to my ever growing collection.

Topshop Beauty Lip Bullet in Back in the Game - (Sorry guys can't find this online, I picked mine up on sale £4.00 in store)

Now I didn't need another blue-toned pink lipstick, like blue nail polish I have too many of them already but I just find them completely irresistible. This is such a pretty colour, it's quite a bit lighter than what I would normally go for, more of a barbie pink than a fuchsia, but it's really nice. I've not actually had much experience with Topshop make up, my local Topshop stocking only the bare minimum, but the formulation of this is amazing. Creamy, highly pigmented, matte yet moisturising and a decent amount of wear time. I'm in love.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Olé Flamingo - £8.99 from Boots

I have sung the praises of the Bourgeois Rouge Edition Velvets from the rooftops (read more about that here),  so I won't bang on about this one too much. Olé Flamingo is an old favourite of mine and I was so gutted after losing mine recently. I had to get new one. The formula is lovely, the wear time is fabulous and that colour is amazing. Enough said.

Illamasqua Nail Polish in Serenity - £14.50 from Illamasqua

Illamasqua is a brand I've long admired from afar. Their make up is dramatic and fun and of a really, beautiful quality but being a perpetually broke student their high end price tags were out of my reach. So when I saw this beautiful turquoise polish in the beauty aisle at T.K. Maxx (my happy place!) for £3.99, they usually retail at £14.50, I snapped it up before the little voice in my head could say NOOOOO you own too many blue polishes put it back! Everything about it is beautiful, especially that gorgeous packaging and the equally stunning, rich turquoise colour. Now I didn't realise this at the time but the finish is matte, which I'm not usually a fan of, but it's actually quite nice. I've only had it on for a couple of days but it's lasted quite well and the formula's nice; thinner than I was expecting so you need 3 - 4 coats to achieve opacity but it's easily workable and builds up nicely.

OPI Nail Lacquer in Cuckoo for this Colour - £6.99 from Amazon

I love OPI for their high coverage formulas and their amazing colour range, so when I saw this beautiful, metallic forest green, I couldn't resist. It was pretty much a no brainer. It's not a particularly summery shade but I can see myself getting a lot of wear out of this come Autumn/Winter. It's a very Christmassy shade. I love it

What's on your make up wish list? Anything you're dying to splash the cash on? Any recommendations for me? I'd love to hear them!
