2014 Beauty Favourites Part 3: Fragrance & Tools

2014 Beauty Favourites Part 3: Fragrance & Tools
Friday 30 January 2015
Read post
Why hello there! And welcome to the third and final part of my 2014 Beauty Favourites! These part few weeks have been hectic and stressful, which is why blog posts have been thin on the ground but I am back now, for the foreseeable future anyway. So without further ado let me tell you all about my favourite scents and tools from last year.

Fragrance:

Tom Ford Black Orchid

Tom Ford Black Orchid is one of my more recent beauty discoveries but it's one I have been completely obsessed with. It is the perfect winter scent, it's warm, spicy and actually quite sexy. And it's really long lasting.  I love it.

Modern Muse by Estée Lauder

Modern Muse is my current fave, I've been wearing it pretty much constantly since I got it because it's beautiful. It's really light and feminine, floral yet wood-y but just so, so lovely.

Tools:

Top: Real Tehniques Buffing Brush, Real Techniques Setting Brush

I went through a bit of a Real Techniques obsession last summer, I basically replaced my entire make up brush collection with Real Techniques brushes. These two bad boys are my favourites.

The Real Techniques Buffing Brush is SENSATIONAL, and I  do not say that lightly. This has completely upped my make up game and changed the way I apply foundation. It is marvellous! It buffs foundation into the skin so easily and leaves a flawless almost airbrushed finish.  It's my favourite make up brush.

I actually use the setting brush for concealer because it is so perfect for that. My skin has been awful so I've been using concealer by the bucketload and this brush has just been awesome. It blends concealer into the skin seamlessly, leaves a a lovely finish on the skin and is the perfect size for covering blemishes (of which there have been many) and dark under eye circles.

What were you favourite scents/tools from last year? Comment below, tell me on twitter or drop me an email at lolarocknroses@gmail.com, also have a look at my instagram, facebook, BlogLovin & pinterest

I'm catching up this week so I'll be back tomorrow. Have a good night and I'll see you then!

2014 Non Beauty Favourites, Part 2: Films & TV

2014 Non Beauty Favourites, Part 2: Films & TV
Thursday 29 January 2015
Read post
It is no secret that I'm a major nerd when it comes to Films & TV, these were my faves from 2014.

My love of comic book movies is widely documented, but GotG might actually be my favourite. It has everything. It's action packed, so funny with some really heartwarming moments, a kickass soundtrack and Groot, need I say anymore?

After reading the book repeatedly I was just as in love with the film when it came out. It made me laugh, it made me cry, stayed true to the book - which I think is incredibly important when it comes to movie adaptations - and was a seriously good film. I loved it. I've also recently discovered the youtube channel John Green has with his brother Hank and have watched all his vlogs about TFIOS and love it even more now, because John Green (and Hank) is way more awesome than I  originally thought.

This is the rare occasion where I actually preferred the film to the book. Not Another Happy Ending is a Scottish romantic comedy starring Karen Gillan - insert heart eyed emoji - as author Jane Lockhart who is struggling to finish her second book and her devious -but extremely handsome- publisher Tom Duval, played by Stanley Weber, who realises that Jane can only write when she's unhappy so sets out to make her miserable. I reviewed it when I first saw it last year so I won't bang on about it too much. It's funny, sweet and thoroughly underrated with some excellent vintage fashion, a gorgeous french man and a pretty decent soundtrack. It's on Netflix and well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Celeste & Jesse Forever

This film is amazing, seriouslyseriously amazing. Celeste and Jesse Forever is a loved story, and by that I mean it's about a couple, the titular Celeste and Jesse, who after a happy marriage are going through a divorce. But here's the twist they still spend every day together, say 'I love you' and act like a couple. It's only when Jesse meets someone else and starts to move on that Celeste, who initiated the divorce, starts to fall apart. It's really funny but bittersweet because you spend the whole film wishing they would just sort it out and get back together. If you liked 500 Days of Summer you will love this.

22 Jump Street

22 Jump Street is hilarious! I think it might actually be better than the first one, and I don't say that lightly because I loved 21 Jump Street. My favourite bit is when Jenko & Schmidt are in the library and Jenko is talking to the bad guys about gay stereotypes and prejudice.  It's so funny. I just love it.

Frozen

I feel like this one really doesn't need explaining. Everyone loves Frozen.

I came across Scandal after a long night of youtube surfing and was immediately hooked. It is amazing. Well written, well acted and so gripping it is actually impossible to watch just a single episode. Scandal is my absolute favourite tv show.

How to Get Away with Murder

Written by the undisputed Queen of  TV (and the woman responsible for Scandal) Shonda Rimes. How to Get Away with Murder, in my humble opinion, is television at it's finest. This show has been keeping me up at nights, although I probably would have been up anyway. But seriously the show is amazing, it's very nuanced with really clever plot twists that constantly keep you guessing. It's gripping. Plus Viola Davis is Queen of Everything. If you haven't watched it already I strongly recommend it.

I got into House in the summer and quickly became obsessed with the curmudgeonly but brilliant Dr Gregory House. He's so rude, it's hilarious. The show is really clever and well written, though it did start to become a tad formulaic towards the end, even so it's still great tv and stars Hugh Laurie who I absolutely adore. Love it.

Broadchurch

Broadchurch might be my favourite tv discovery of last year. It is incredible. Broadchurch is so cleverly written that never at any point did I have any inkling of who the killer was. I had no idea. Not only is the story great but it is brilliantly acted, I'd expect nothing less from David Tennant but Olivia Coleman is the true star of the show. She's amazing. I'm obsessing over season 2 at the moment and so far it's just as good as season 1. Who'd have thought I'd look forward to Mondays?!

Parks & Recreation

Parks and Rec is one of my absolute favourite tv shows. It is hysterically funny and stars five of my favourite people: Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Chris Pratt, Nick Offerman and Aubrey Plaza. I super love it and I'm so sad that this season is the last one.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

For those who don't know It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a comedy about 5 really awful people.  I'm serious they are terrible people. But they are so funny. My old housemate introduced It's Always Sunny to me about a year ago and I liked it but didn't really get into it at the time but then I found it on Netflix and just loved it. It's so funny.

The Mindy Project

I have talked about my love of The Mindy Project more times than I can count, to the point where I was debating whether or not to include it but of course I had to. I am obsessed with The Mindy Project and just Mindy in general.  I love it ridiculous amounts.

New Girl

Another old favourite that had to be included, I recently re-watched New Girl from the beginning and remembered just how funny it is. I love it.
The Office (US)

My best friend introduced me to The Office earlier in the year and it has become a firm favourite. The writing is hilarious -Thank you Mindy!-, the casting is marvellous -and brought the beautiful and funny John Krasinski to my attention-  and I actually prefer it to the original.

2014 Beauty Favourites Part 2: Hair & Skincare

2014 Beauty Favourites Part 2: Hair & Skincare
Monday 19 January 2015
Read post
Welcome to part 2 of 3 of my 2014 Beauty Favourites. This post, as you can probably tell from the title, is all about the skin and hair care that I was loving in 2014.

Skin Care:

It's no secret that my skin was not at it's best last year, a lethal combination of stress, the eating habits of a fussy toddler and even worse sleeping habits have really taken it out of my skin. These 5 products have been incredible in my fight for better skin.

I've been using this mask once a week to decongest my skin and prevent blackheads developing and it's really helped to contain the problem. Containing such spot fighting lovelies as Cinnamon, Charcoal (duh!) and Dragon Fruit it leaves my skin feeling so clean and fresh and it always looks so much better afterwards.

This mask is a gift sent from the Skincare Gods! And my skin just laps it up. I've been using it every week and it has made my dry, scaly skin feel beautifully soft and nourished.

I've been using this moisturiser every morning for months and I just love it. It melts into the skin, leaving me with soft, nourished skin and a perfect base for makeup.

Witch Naturally Clear Blemish Stick

This is my go to spot treatment for any particularly big juicy spots. It dries them up like it ain't no thing. I just pop it on the offending blemish at night and by morning it's gone or greatly reduced depending on the size of the spot. Now I'm not gonna lie to you lovely people the Witch Stick is not without it's faults. It is very drying on the skin, which is why it works so well on spots, but it does mean you have to be very precise when applying so you don't dry out your  skin.  Even so it's great for emergency giant spot situations. I'm breaking out at the moment and I'm so gutted I don't have it with me.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil

Another excellent treatment for spotty skin. This tiny bottle is amazing, it lasts forever and the tiniest bit makes all the difference to my badly behaved skin.  Like the Witch Stick, this gets rid of spots like nobody's business, unlike the Witch Stick it's not even remotely drying on the skin. I love it.

Hair Care:

L - R: Frizz Ease Daily Miracle Leave-in Conditioner, Frizz Ease Extra Strength 6 Effects Serum & Avon Advance Techniques 360 Nourishment Moroccan Argan Oil Leave-in Treatment

My hair is difficult to say the least, when it behaves (which is rare) I love it, when it doesn't I seriously, seriously hate it, like chop it all off and start wearing wigs hate it. These 3 are absolute staples in my frizz fighting arsenal and the reason I currently have longish hair and no wigs.

Frizz Ease Daily Miracle Leave-in Conditioner

I've used this almost everyday for the past 3 years or so because it's amazing. I spritz it onto soaking wet hair and it makes my hair behave itself. It's a really conditioning, light weight spray that leaves my hair crazy soft and virtually frizz free. For a while I was worried that it would stop working if my hair got too used to it, so I stopped using it and the condition of my hair changed drastically. It was dry, frizzy and completely unmanageable. I started using it again and it improved my hair straight away. It really is a miracle.

I dread to think what my hair would look like if I didn't use this serum. Seriously it is that good. I run 2 pumps of serum through freshly washed hair, avoiding the roots,  and it completely tames my hair leaving me with defined, shiny curls. Love it.

AKA the best and most beautiful argan oil I have ever come across. It's really light weight and just leaves my hair looking and feeling amazing. It calms down frizz, defines curls, protects from the heat and it just does everything. I love it.

Have you tried any of these products? What did you think? Let me know on twitter, by commenting below or dropping me an email. Also make sure you're following me on instagram, facebook, Bloglovin & pinterest.

It's gonna be a bit quiet on the blog front for the next couple of weeks or so because I have 2 very long uni assignments due in in a very short space of time. But I will try to update you guys as and when I can.

Until then...

2014 Non Beauty Favourites, Part 1: Youtube

2014 Non Beauty Favourites, Part 1: Youtube
Monday 12 January 2015
Read post

2014 was the year that youtube became quite a big part of my life (I know how sad that sounds considering I'm not actually on youtube...yet!) Obviously I was aware of it and I could certainly kill an hour or two watching such classics as Charlie Bit Me, and I've always loved surfing youtube for new music but that was pretty much it. It was only this year that I realised the full extent of it's awesomeness. These are my Top 5 Fave Youtubers of 2014.

I mentioned Sorted Food in my December Favourites so I won’t bang on about them too much. All I'll say is they make amazing food, they’re hilarious, they're videos are great and Mike’s extremely easy on the eyes. Sorted... I'm not actually sure if I'm allowed to say that.

Anna was actually the first youtuber I started watching way back in February and since then I haven't missed a video. I love her blog too. Her photographs are beautiful, her copy is on point and she seems like such a sweetheart.

Anna may have been first but Lily wasn't far behind. I love her for the same reasons I love Anna which makes sense as they're blog besties. Her photos are stunning and she has a good writing style. She seems nice too and I always feel really inspired after watching her videos.

Fleur is a relatively new discovery of mine, - I know, have I been living under a rock?! - but I seriously love her. I haven't read much of her blog but I love her videos. She seems really nice and what she doesn't know about make up probably isn't worth knowing.

Essie Button was one of my earlier youtube discoveries. I think she's brilliant, she's so honest and hilarious. She cracks me up and her videos are great.

This is just my Top 5, I've barely scraped the surface of my youtube loves. I spend the majority of my free time on youtube and my other faves include Hello October xo, I Covet Thee, Beauty Crush, Amelia Liana, A Model Recommends, Lauren Curtis, Glam Life Guru and the list goes on and on and on.

Who are your favourite Youtubers? Are there people I'm missing that I should definitely be watching? Let me know on twitter, by commenting below or dropping me an email.

2014 was a great year for me make up wise. It was the year I started using bronzer and realised the true potential of make up, which only made me love it more. First up make up and nails, you might want to grab yourself a cup of tea... maybe a snack of some kind, because it's gonna be a long one :)

I recently crowned L’Oreal True Match my favourite foundation and I stand by that sentiment.  With decent, buildable coverage, a beautiful dewy yet matte finish (I don't understand how that works either) and a formula that sticks around it's no wonder it's my favourite.

My skin wasn't at it's best in 2014. There were breakouts, blackheads, blemishes, great big giant spots... the lot! For those days when my skin was at it's worst I reached for Seventeen's Phwoaar Paint to save the day. With a thick and creamy consistency it's perfect for covering any particularly juicy blemishes and because it's yellow toned it neutralises any redness/hyper pigmentation. It also lasts really well, particularly considering how creamy it is. I've found that it works best when applied BEFORE foundation as it blends in better this way. Unorthodox? Maybe. Does it work? Definitely.

The other concealer I was reaching for throughout 2014 was Rimmel's Wake Me Up concealer in Soft Beige. I don't have the best sleeping habits and have some serious under eye baggage going on. But this covers bags and brightens the under eye area like it ain't no thing, making me look bright eyed and bushey tailed when really I've been up all night watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The overall coverage it gives is really good, as it covers redness, hyper pigmentation and blemishes. It's a good all rounder.

Soap & Glory One Heck of a Blot Translucent Powder

Before 2014 I never really got powders, I had one it was okay, good, not great, but then I tried One Heck of a Blot and then I got it. One Heck of a Blot is a really light weight, finely milled  translucent powder that really locks in my make up and leaves my face with a velvety smooth finish. I love it, which you could probably tell from the picture.

Bronzer/Blush:

Soap & Glory Solar Powder

I was always a bit wary of bronzer, being paler than the moon and all, but Solar Powder is fabulous. Especially for all us pale chicks. I prefer the lighter honey shade, as the warmer brown is just a tad too dark for me, but works really well when I swirl the two together. It really warms up my otherwise colourless complexion. Love it.

You'd never know it but I've had this blusher for over two years and have worn it nearly every day since. I'm not even close to hitting pan yet. I've played with a lot of new blushers this year but Dame will always be my favourite. It's the prettiest, rosy pink that transforms my complexion from Casper the Friendly Ghost to that of an english rose. It's beautiful.

Eyes:

Long lasting gel liner with a blacker than black formula that is both crease proof and incredibly easy to apply. The rubber tip makes for one of the easiest cat eye flicks ever (stamp and glide). I think it's amazing.

This is the eyeshadow palette I probably got the most use out of in 2014 and 2013 for that matter. This is my second one so that should tell you all you need to know. Made up of neutral shimmers this is my go to palette for a neutral yet smokey eye make up look. The shadows are reasonably long lasting, soft in texture and pigmented with a decent colour pay off. I'll be honest it isn't perfect, there are some fall out issues when applying and the shadows are slightly on the chalky side, but for £4 it's really good.

AKA the best mascara on the highstreet. It just does everything I could ever want from a mascara. Like a really great bra it lifts and separates, unlike a  great bra it curls and volumises. The formula is fantastic, super black, doesn't smudge or flake and just gives me the best lashes. It's a staple every girl needs: a good bra and this mascara.

Model Co More Brow is a light weight, tinted brow gel, that shapes my brows and sets them in place, without leaving them crispy. The colour is a medium ashy brown that is the perfect colour match for me and the application is really easy with the tiny but effective spoolie taming my brows and distributing the product evenly. I really like it.

Lips:

For a while this lipstick was the only thing I could talk about and for good reason, it is, simply put, the most beautiful lipstick I own. The colour is a beautiful blue toned fuschia with a formula that is long lasting, although it does need to be reapplied after eating/drinking. Due to it's delightfully creamy consistency it's really moisturising and feels so comfortable on the lips. It get's bonus points for smelling like vanilla! In my expansive lipstick collection this is my absolute favourite. It's all kinds of heart eyed emoji!
 Image via

I've been utterly obsessed with the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets since they were released last summer. The colours are lovely and the formulas are equally so: bouncy, lightweight and only slightly drying, but the very best part is the longevity. Once it's on, it is on! It ain't going nowhere for no one. You can eat, drink, be merry and look fabulous all at the same time. No longer will I have to choose between the two, food wins hands down everytime. They're incredible.

I love this lip pencil. I know I've talked about it so much recently but it's because I love it so much. I won't bore you by listing it's many virtues because at this point I'll be repeating myself. It's amazing. Trust.
Nails:

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy Nail Enamel in Up the Ante & Dealer's Choice.

Okay I know I have ranted and raved about the fabulousness of the Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy Nail Enamels until the cows came home, went to bed and told me to shut up already but in my defence they are my absolute favourite beauty discovery of 2014. The formulation is as close to perfect as a nail enamel can possibly be. I am obsessed with them! And I promise this is the last time I will mention them... for now.

At first glance the Sally Hansen Maximum Growth appears to be just another base coat but you can actually see it working and that just blows my mind. It's incredible. As a recovering nail biter with incredibly weakened nails this has made such a difference. My nails are stronger and are growing quicker because of it. It's amazing.

Soigné Botanique in Bleu Vodka

It's just so pretty! The colour is the most beautiful turquoise. But the formula is the real star! It's lovely, longlasting and creamy but easily workable and the brush is easy to use making for smooth and easy application. This is the only Soigné polish I own at the moment but I will definitely be adding more to my collection.

Barry M Nail Paint in Vintage Violet & Barry M Gelly Hi Shine Nail Paint in Sugar Apple.

I'm a huge fan of Barry M's Nail Paint, they make up at least 40% of my 300 strong nail polish collection, but these two were my absolute favourites of last year. I had Sugar Apple on my nails constantly throughout the summer because it's such a lovely colour. Then when Autumn rolled around I switched to Vintage Violet. It's such an unusual, smokey purple but it looks so pretty on the nails. Like all Barry M Nail Paints they have a great formula that is reasonably long lasting, workable and easy to apply. All that for under a fiver... bargain.

If you stuck with this post until the end then thank you :) I'm aware that it's on the longer and ramblier side of things. I had a lot of make up favourites in 2014. But what I want to know is what were your 2014 faves? Let me know on twitter, by commenting below or even by dropping me an email lolarocknroses@gmail.com. Also check out my instagram, facebook, Bloglovin & pinterest

That was the tip of the iceberg for my 2014 Beauty Faves, Part 2 will be up over the weekend. Then of course there's always the matter of my 2014 Non Beauty Faves, of which there are many, which will be up soon.

Until then

My Top 5 (ish) Drug Store Beauty Finds of 2014

My Top 5 (ish) Drug Store Beauty Finds of 2014
Sunday 4 January 2015
Read post

Top L - R: Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets in Hot Pepper &  Olé Flamingo,  Benefit They're Real Push Up Liner.
Bottom L-R: L'Oreal Paris Miss Manga Mega Volume Mascara, Revlon Color Stay Gel Envy Nail Lacquer in Up the Ante & Rimmel Glam Eyes HD eyeshadow palette in Brixton Brown.

Before we get settled into 2015 I have some loose ends from 2014 to tie up. One of which being my Favourites but before they go up - later in the week - I thought I would give you a round up of  my Top 5 (ish) Drug Store Beauty Finds of 2014. I have to say it's been a fantastic year :)

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets in Hot Pepper &  Olé Flamingo

In my humble opinion Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet is the best liquid lipstick on the high street. It's wonderful, with a rather lovely matte finish and a formula that is both longlasting and only slightly drying - nothing a quick slick of lipbalm before application can't fix. It has an almost bouncy, gel like consistency that feels reasonably comfortable on the lips and stays in place for hours and the colours are beautiful. They're just all kinds of heart eyed emoji.

Revlon Color Stay Gel Envy Nail Lacquer in Up the Ante & Dealer's Choice

Dealer's Choice

If you're a regular reader you know my thoughts on this practically perfect nail lacquer. The formula is so good that I kinda want to eat it... I won't though because that's weird and almost certainly dangerous. The formula is long lasting, with a shiny, gel like finish and applies like an absolute dream. Add to that a beautiful colour range, particularly those two stunners pictured, and I am one happy camper... except I don't like camping.

I fell hard and fast for this eyeliner when it was first released this summer before promptly forgetting all about it and then I rediscovered it and loved it all over again. It's amazing. The rubber nib is a stroke (if that's a pun it was definitely unintentional) of genius, admittedly it does take some getting used to but once you're used to it application becomes redonkulously easy and it's the easiest cat eye flick ever. Just stamp and glide people, stamp and glide. Love it.

2014 for me has been all about mascara... and eyeshadow palettes, nail polish, foundation, eyeliner... just make up in general really. Anyway I tried loads of new mascaras in 2014 andL'Oreal Paris Miss Manga Mega Volume Mascara was  my favourite! It's magical, and I do not say that lightly. It does everything you could want from a mascara and more. With a long lasting blacker than black formula that doesn't smudge nor flake and a brush that lengthens, curls, volumises and separates whilst coating even the hard to reach lashes in the corner of the eye. It's amazing. Seriously amazing.

Rumour has it that Brixton Brown is an excellent and far more affordable dupe of Charlotte Tilbury's Dolce Vita quad, and as far as I can tell, not actually owning it...yet, the only real difference is the extra purpley shade and the absence of the copper glitter. The shadows themselves are buttery soft, long lasting and don't crease. Winner.

Bonus favourite:

I'm not gonna lie I'm not a massive fan of Maybelline in general, I just find them to be a bit hit and miss and a bit more miss than hit BUT this little gem of a lip pencil may have turned it all around for me. It is beautiful! The formula is super pigmented and really creamy but so long lasting and oh so comfortable on the lips that 9 times out of 10 I forget it's there. It's gorgeous.

Have you tried any my top finds? What do you think? Love them? Hate them? Let me know on twitter, by commenting below or dropping me an email at lolarocknroses@gmail.com. Also head over to my instagram, facebook, Bloglovin & pinterest if you like pictures of cake or dogs :)
