Let's talk about the awesomeness that is Barry M's latest release shall we?

Now I know I am kinda late to the party with these as they've been causing quite the stir in the beauty world for about a month now. I'd been  dying to try these out for quite some time and just hadn't got round to picking any up. This weekend that all changed when I  finally got my hands on Road Rage and Pole Position.

Road Rage is a super pretty mint blue that is absolutely stunning while Pole Position is a cute pastel-y apple green that is so pretty and summery. Road Rage is my favourite out of the two but both are really lovely and apply so beautifully. The Quick Dry range features a new wider, flat brush that curves at the edges for an easier, quicker and more accurate application. The formula is lovely too: thick, creamy,  easy to apply and oh my god so fast drying it could make your head spin.  For colours this light you expect 3 coats of polish minimum which is pretty standard but they dry so quickly it's kind of unbelievable. It dries in seconds. Blink and you'd miss it. All in all it took me about 10 minutes to paint my nails, which is unheard of for me.

Eat My Dust is next on my list but I'm a little bit in love with the whole collection and will definitely be picking up more.

Have you tried any of the Barry M Speedy Quick Dry Nail Paints? What's your favourite? Let me know on twitter, by commenting below or dropping me an email.  Also check out my instagram, facebook, bloglovin and pinterest for your daily updates.

I hope everyone has had a lovely week and is getting ready for an even better weekend. I'll  be back on Sunday.

Until then,

Super Yummy Healthy Pancakes

Super Yummy Healthy Pancakes
Tuesday 28 April 2015
Read post

I've been on Slimming World for a month now - and lost 12 pounds! - and even though I'm not finding it nearly as hard as I thought I would it's not the easiest thing I've ever done. (Having to break up with chocolate has just been the worst!) BUT it's totally worth it.

The only thing is after a while food can get a bit same-y and that's the last thing you want. After weeks of beans and poached eggs on butterless wholemeal toast for breakfast I thought I'd give these pancakes a whirl and they're amazing! Not only were they were ridiculously easy to make, they were super yummy too and the best part about the whole thing is they're not bad for you. Like not even a little bit! Obviously I had to share this with you lot... far be it from to keep this recipe to myself.

(Note: these are best served as small American style pancakes, otherwise the whole thing turns into a giant oaty, eggy mess that looks like cat food! Yuck!)

Serves 2, makes between 6 - 9 pancakes.

Ingredients

70g Rolled Porridge Oats
240g Yoghurt (I used Mullerlight Greek)
2 Eggs
2 tbsp Sweetener
Frylight

Method:

1. Mix the yoghurt and oats and put in the fridge to chill, preferably overnight but a couple of hours will do.

2. When the oats and yoghurt have chilled for a bit whisk the eggs and sweetener into the mixture until it starts to resemble pancake batter. It doesn't become completely smooth but has that kind of gloopy, spooning (LOL) consistency.

3. Pre-heat the frying pan and spray liberally with Frylight - non- Slimming World-ers can just use oil.

4. Dollop a tablespoon of the mixture into the frying pan and let it spread. Fry on either side for 3 - 4 minutes.

5.  Serve, eat and enjoy. I had mine with a teaspoon of honey and  berries and it was amazing, but you can have anything. They'd be incredible with nutella, everything is incredible with nutella!

This is the first recipe post I've ever done so I really hope you enjoyed it. If you try these pancakes, or want more slimmer friendly recipes, then let me know on twitter, by commenting below or dropping me an email. Also check out my instagram, bloglovin, facebook & pinterest if you have a minute.

Right guys have a lovely week and I'll be back on Thursday.

Until then...

Lipgloss vs Lipstick

L-R:  L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Lipstick in Blake's Pure Red,  Seventeen Lip Lustre in Red,  Burt's Bees Lip Shine in Blush, Mac Amplified Creme Lipstick in Girl About Town, Soap & Glory  Super Colour Fabu- Lipstick in Pom Pom  & Clinique Chubby Stick in 06 Woppin' Watermelon.

L-R:  Mac Amplified Creme Lipstick in Girl About Town, Soap & Glory  Super Colour Fabu- Lipstick in Pom Pom, L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Lipstick in Blake's Pure Red,  Burt's Bees Lip Shine in Blush, Clinique Chubby Stick in 06 Woppin' Watermelon  & Seventeen Lip Lustre in Red.

Lately me and lipstick haven't been quite the besties we once were. More and more I've found myself avoiding my beloved matte, high coverage, long lasting formulas and my favourite bold lipsticks (I'm looking at you Soap & Glory's Pom-Pom, Mac's Girl About Town and L'Oreal's Blake's Pure Red) in favour of sheer washes of colour and glosses. Don't ask me why, initially I thought it was something to do with a loss of confidence but recently I've gotten my groove back and I'm starting to think  it's something to do with the maintenance. Love it or hate it lipstick wearing is one high maintenance business.

Now as a self-confessed gloss-hater (hate is too strong a word, gloss-disliker) choosing gloss over lipstick just feels weird but I have to say I've enjoyed the change. Yes gloss doesn't last forever, tends to be on the stickier side of things and attracts hair like a magnet BUT it's lighter on the lips, rarely gets on teeth and/or down my chin, it's also way better for the warmer weather and you don't even need a mirror just slick and go my friends, slick and go.

My current fav0urite lipglosses are Seventeen Lip Lustre in Red, Clinique Chubby Stick  in 06 Woppin' Watermelon and 07 Super Strawberry (not swatched), and Burt's Bees Lip Shine in Blush. All of them give a nice pop of colour to the lips and leave a nice glossy, but not too glossy, finish.  The Chubby Sticks are my favourites because they have the best formula and pigmentation. But for days when I'm feeling more neutral - they're rare but they do happen - I love the Burt's Bees which is a really beautiful caramel-y pink nude and the most long lasting of the bunch.

I doubt this gloss loving thing will last forever I am first and foremost a lipstick lover but for now it's nice to shake things up a bit.

Which do you prefer? Gloss or Lipstick? What are your favourites? Let me know on twitter, by commenting below or even dropping me an email at lolarocknroses@gmail.com. Also if you've got a minute check out my instagram, facebook, bloglovin & pinterest.

Have yourselves a lovely week and I'll be back on Tuesday.

Lola Loves... Reading

Lola Loves... Reading
Thursday 23 April 2015
Read post
I was talking with my best friend last night, setting the world to rights and all that, when the conversation turned to reading and how much we both love it. As an MA English Student I do A LOT of reading. I'd say I spend about 90% of my time with a book/kindle (/kindle app on my phone/iPad) in my hand and even though most of the time I'm reading something I really don't want to be I always try find time to read for the sake of reading. So with that in mind, and it being World Book Day and all, I thought I'd share with you lot the books I've been reading and loving lately.

Looking For Alaska by John Green

I'm reading this at the moment and I'm really enjoying it. I'm slowly working my way through everything John Green's ever written (because I like super love him) and whilst LFA isn't my favourite - it's a tie between The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns - it's a good story that's both funny and sad and a really good read. Miles 'Pudge' moves to Culver Creek Boarding School in Alabama in search of 'A Great Perhaps.' Which turns up in the form of Alaska Young. Alaska is beautiful and exciting but deeply troubled. As Miles falls in love with her he struggles to reconcile the Alaska he loves with her angrier, bitchier side. It's very similar to Paper Towns (read my review here) in that it addresses how we idealise people, and loving the idea of a person is not the same as loving them. If you haven't checked it out I would definitely recommend it.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

I read this just after Christmas and then read it again a few weeks later because I enjoyed it that much. To All The Boys I've Loved Before is about Lara Jean, a young Korean girl, who has been in love with her neighbour and best friend Josh forever. There's just one catch he's her older sister Margot's boyfriend. To get over Josh, and all the guys she loved before, she writes them a letter that she never intends to send. When these letters accidentally get sent out all hell breaks lose for Lara Jean and to save face in front of Josh she pretends one of her classmates is her boyfriend and things get... complicated. I really enjoyed it, it's funny and sweet and oh so teenage but awesome. Fans of New Girl will love it.

Sweet Temptation by Lucy Diamond

This is chick-lit at it's very finest. Sweet Temptation is about three overweight women Maddie, Lauren and Jess who meet at a weight-loss group and follows their lives as they struggle to lose weight (#thestruggleisreal) It sounds pretty naff I know but it is a really good, easy read. I found myself getting sucked into the story and actually caring about the characters. I really enjoyed it, it's a perfect Beach Read.

What are the books you're loving at the moment? Let me know on twitter - use the hashtag #LolaLoves, by commenting below or dropping me an email to lolarocknroses@gmail.com. Also check me out instagram, facebook, bloglovin & pinterest. That's me for this evening but I'll be back Sunday. Until then have yourselves a lovely week.

L-R: Soigné in Vodka Bleu, Maybelline Forever Strong Super Stay Seven Day in Uptown Blue, Essie in Avenue Maintain, Nails Inc in  Kensington Park Road  & Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine in Blueberry.

If you were to rifle through my, quite frankly ridiculous, nail polish collection (300 and counting) you would probably notice that the majority of shades are blue. There's just something about a blue polish that I just can't resist. So I thought I'd share my faves. My 5 Shades of Blue if you will.

Soigné in Vodka Bleu - Vodka Bleu is a really rich dark turquoise-y blue with a seriously awesome formula. It's super pigmented, opaque in just one coat and ridiculously long lasting. Wild horses can't drag this bad boy away! It has an awesome brush, it applies absolutely effortlessly and just looks so gorgeous on the nails.  Love it.

Maybelline Forever Strong Super Stay Seven Day in Uptown Blue - I haven't had this that long but it has fast become one of my fave light blues. Spring means pastels and this lovely polish more than fits the bill. It is such a pretty sky blue with an almost fluorescent quality to it that really pops. It would look amazing against tanned skin (unfortunately I'll never know being paler than the moon and all.) Not only is the colour pretty special but the formula's awesome too, for  a colour this light I would expect at least 3 coats for it to be opaque but it's really thick and creamy and only took 2. Winner.

Essie in Avenue Maintain - This is one of the first Essie polishes I ever bought and to this day it remains one of my favourites. The colour is super pretty, just a lovely sky blue that is perfect for springtime. I super love it.

Nails Inc in  Kensington Park Road -  This is one of my most used nail polishes ever! Seriously you can actually see a line from where I've used it so much and with so many nail polishes that just doesn't happen very often. It is a really beautiful neon blue that demands attention, you can't not look at it. It's so pretty but bad ass at the same time. I love it so much. It is all the hearteyed emojis!

Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine in Blueberry - This is the most gorgeous lilac toned cornflower blue, like Uptown Blue it has a neon quality that really stands out. The Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine's have a fabulous formula: opaque in 2 coats, reasonably long lasting with a shiny gel like finish - hence the name - and they're cheap as chips.  Lovely.

My Biggest Beauty Bores

My Biggest Beauty Bores
Sunday 12 April 2015
Read post
Before I get started on my biggest beauty bores I just wanted to take a second to thank everyone for the really lovely response I had to my last post (if you haven’t read it yet you can here.) It’s really scary to put something like that out into the weird and wonderful but terrifying place that is in the internet but you lot have made me so glad that I did.

Right mushy part over let’s talk beauty bores. We all have them, the parts in our beauty routine that are way more chore than treat.

Dyeing my hair.

For the past 4 years my hair has been a vibrant cherry red. It is hands down the best hair decision I ever made BUT it is a Bitch, with a capital B, to maintain. Right now I have about an inch of mousey brown roots on display and it’s driving me crazy but the fact of the matter is I just can’t be bothered. I HATE dyeing my hair. The only thing I hate more than dyeing my hair is having visible roots so I’ll definitely be giving them a touch up soon. But it is such a ball-ache, it takes ages, it smells awful, the fumes give me a headache and for weeks after the shower looks like a murder scene whenever I wash my hair.
Painting my nails

Now here’s the thing with painting my nails, if I’m in the mood for it then I absolutely LOVE painting my nails, especially when I have an essay due in, then all I want to do is paint my nails. But if I’m not in the mood, which 9 times out of 10 I’m not, then it just feels like way more bother than it’s worth.

Plucking my eyebrows

So I know this one sounds gross, and trust me I’m not walking around with bushy wolfman eyebrows. Luckily I have quite light eyebrows so I can get away with not plucking them as much because I really do hate it. Not only does plucking sting but it’s so boring. I’d get them waxed or threaded but I’m too much of a chicken. Plucking my eyebrows is just one of those things that I will put off and put off until I literally have no other choice but to do it,  even having sparkly tweezers (these ones are Japonesque just fyi) isn't enough to get me to do it.  Seriously the only thing I hate more than plucking my eyebrows is doing uni work… and that is saying something.
Moisturising

I am a nightmare, I take really good care of the skin on my face and hands but other than that I just can’t be bothered. I think this is partly because I’ve never found a moisturiser I really love that doesn’t take forever to sink in. I also have really sensitive skin so I have to be super careful with the products I use so most of the time I just don’t. Having said that I do always regret not moisturising come sun dress season and I’m wearing tights to hide the state of my dry and flaky legs (gross!)

I hope you guys are all out enjoying the sunshine and I'll be back on Tuesday

Let's Get Real: The Big FAT Truth

Let's Get Real: The Big FAT Truth
Thursday 9 April 2015
Read post

Today I'm gonna share some incredibly personal stuff with you. A lot of this isn't something I'm particularly comfortable talking about but I felt like this was the right thing to do.

Now before we get into the super personal nitty gritty I thought I'd tell you a bit more about Let's Get Real, which is a new monthly series I'm starting where I'll be sharing my experiences and giving you my take on more sensitive issues. This week I'm talking about my weight. I've briefly talked about my weight on here before (read more about that here) but I've never really gone into details.

So here it is. I'm overweight. And I hate it. I really hate it. I haven't always been, I didn't actually start gaining weight until I was about 13, after my adored Grandad died, but by that point I'd been told I was fat and needed to lose weight since I was 9. Yep you read that right 9! I'll be 24 in 2 weeks. Which means I've spent two thirds of my life feeling fat and hating myself because of it. And that is too long.

I don't know about you but when someone tells me to do something I don't want to I instantly rebel. The same thing happened when I was told to lose weight instead I went in the complete opposite direction. I had a 'screw you!' kinda attitude and it only made me seek comfort in food more but in the end I was only hurting myself.

Being overweight has shaped my entire life. My self-confidence is very low, it's something I have to work on every single day and I'm way better then I used to be but I have to work at it, it doesn't come easily to me. I have stayed in really bad relationships because I didn't believe that I was good enough for anyone else, or that anyone else would love me. I've let people treat me like absolute sh*t because I thought I deserved it. I feel uncomfortable in a lot of social situations because I feel like I'm being judged - mostly I'm not being judged by anyone other than me - and I finally decided enough was enough.

3 weeks ago I joined Slimming World and already it has made such an incredible difference to me. Monday night was my second weigh in and in just two weeks I've lost 6.5 pounds and I feel so much better for it. I've got a bit of a way to go until I hit target but already I'm feeling more positive, I'm eating so much better, I'm more active and have a better outlook on life. I know that sounds incredibly cheesy but it's 100% true.

For a long time food has been a source of comfort to me, if I have a bad day my first thought is to reach for the chocolate but that is starting to change. I'm beginning to feel good about the choices I make and -very slowly- I'm starting to feel good about myself too.

Like I said this is incredibly personal to me, and honestly it's really scary to put this out there so if you don't like or disagree with what I've said please be kind. My goal with Let's Get Real isn't to offend anyone it's just to share my experiences so yeah... be nice.

Anywho I hope that's helped anyone who is struggling with their weight and feeling down on themselves because of it. I'll be back on Sunday. Until then you can tweet me, comment below or even email me at lolarocknroses@gmail.com. I'm also on instagram, bloglovin, facebook and pinterest so check those out if you have a minute.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque
Tuesday 7 April 2015
Read post

In the last 8 months or so my skin has changed for the worse. Once upon a time my skin was  normal, slightly sensitive but mostly clear with only the occasional blackhead. How I miss those days! Now it's a completely different story. My skin is  dry, super sensitive, prone to almost constant breakouts/blackheads and it seems that no matter what I do it doesn't get any better.

I was getting pretty desperate when I thought I'd give the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque a try, I'd heard good things and thought why not?  The Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque is a thick, green clay mask  that promises a deeply clean, oil free and healthy looking complexion by deeply cleansing and refreshing the skin, absorbing excess oil, extracting impurities and minimizing the appearance of  pores. It promises a lot.  But it so delivers.

The first time I used it I left it on for 10 minutes and it didn't seem to make too much of a difference, the second time, however, I left it on for longer and Woah Mama! The difference it made is incredible.  My skin is clearer and smoother, my pores are reduced and it feels so fresh and clean. It didn't get rid of all my  blackheads because some of those bad boys are really in there (sorry that's so gross!) but it did get rid of any superficial blackheads, dried out any whiteheads and made my skin look and feel so much clearer. Not only is it awesome, but it smells gorgeous too, like spearmint, and it feels really soft against the skin. It's also ridiculously affordable, that giant 340g tub cost me less than £5 on amazon. Bargain!

I wasn't expecting miracles, and the first time I tried it I wasn't impressed, but actually I do really think it's amazing and I strongly recommend it,  maybe not for those with dry skin because it can be slightly drying but it would work really well for those with combination or oily skin.

Have you tried the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque? What did you think? Let me know on twitter, by commenting  below or dropping me an email to lolarocknroses@gmail.com.  Also check out my instagram, facebook, Bloglovin and pinterest

Lola Rocks #5 ... The March Music Favourites

Lola Rocks #5 ... The March Music Favourites
Sunday 5 April 2015
Read post

You might have noticed that nowhere in my March Favourites, Beauty or otherwise, did I talk about music, which, I know,  is unheard of for me. I had so many that I thought it'd just be easier to dedicate a post to them. So here they are.

Smile by Mikky Ekko

I have not stopped listening to this since I first heard it in the Paper Towns trailer (side note: I'm so excited for that movie! Read my book review here.) It is such an awesome, uplifting yet bittersweet song and I just love it. Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

To the Top by Twin Shadow

I have loved this song for a long time but had kinda forgot all about it until recently when I just completely fell back in love with it. It's another song that is happy/sad but totally awesome.

XO by  Beyoncé

So I know this song is like a year old but I'd genuinely never heard it until it was featured in an episode of The Mindy Project recently (I know! Apparently I live under a rock!and I was hooked. Queen Bee knows how to bring it.

Dancing on my Own by Kings of Leon

When I first heard Kings of Leon's cover of Robyn's 2010 hit Dancing on my Own a few years ago I was immediately obsessed and then once again forgot about it. But after falling back in love with it I can safely say it is amazing. I liked the original anyway but KOL just take it to the next level. In their very capable hands this song becomes moody and sultry and heartbreaking but mostly just incredible.

Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Is it just me or has this song been EVERYWHERE lately?! I'm not complaining because it's so good. It's really, happy and upbeat but also really nostalgic. It sounds like it's from the 50's, which only makes me love it more. I can't help but sing along when I listen to it. It makes me so happy.

Simple Song by The Shins

Yet another great song that I loved and then forgot all about (I really must stop doing that!) I just love everything about this song.

Elastic Heart by Sia

Me and Sia are having a bit of a moment right now (well I am... she's not aware of it)  I just love her, I think she is absolutely fascinating as an artist and her music is amazing. I haven't been able to get Elastic Heart out of my head.  It's so good.

Grow Old by The Naked & Famous

I love The Naked & Famous (woah that sounds weird!).  Grow Old is my favourite song off their second album In Rolling Waves. For some reason I find this song really sad, even though it isn't really.  It's quite hard to describe because it's electro but I think it's gorgeous. Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Sorry I know that was on the longer and ramblier side of things, but these were all the songs I was loving throughout March. What songs are you loving at the moment? Let me know by commenting below, on twitter or by dropping me an email at lolarocknroses@gmail.com. I'm always on the hunt for new music so would really love your recommendations. If you do leave a comment I always try to reply so do check back. Also check out my instagram, facebook, bloglovin & pinterest

I hope you've all had a fabulous Easter and have had all the chocolate and hot cross buns (my fave Easter treat!) and I'll see you soon.

Until then...

March Non-Beauty Favourites 2015

March Non-Beauty Favourites 2015
Thursday 2 April 2015
Read post

March was a weird month, I think for the first time ever I had way more Non-Beauty faves than Beauty Faves.

Wunderlist

Wunderlist is my favourite thing ever. Seriously this app now controls my life and I swear I mean that as a good thing. I love making lists BUT I always forget to check them so I end up forgetting to do things and it all becomes a bit pointless. Enter Wunderlist! It is so awesome, I can run multiple lists, so all my lists are in one place and it lets me set reminders so I get all the stuff done that I need to. I seriously love it.

Archer

Archer is my new tv obsession. I watched all 6 seasons within a week and liked it so much I started it again. For those who don't know Archer is an animated show about a James Bond-esque secret agent, Sterling Archer, who works with his ex-girlfriend at a spy agency run by his mother. It is so funny and so dark but honestly brilliant and I really love it. I'm harbouring a bit of a crush on Archer, which I know is super weird what with him being a cartoon character and all.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

I have to say March was a cracking month for TV! I watched Netflix's new original series in under 48 hours that's how good/addictive it was. Starring The Office US alumn Ellie Kemper and written by Queen of Everything Tina Fey Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is about a group of women who have escaped a doomsday cult after being imprisoned for 15 years. Kimmy, who was kidnapped in her early teens, decides to start life over in New York and moves in with a fabulously funny Broadway wannabe and tries to adjust to life outside the bunker. It is hilarious and heartwarming and Netflix brilliance at it's very best! Fans of New Girl & The Mindy Project will love this!

Gossip Girl

I was absolutely obsessed with Gossip Girl when it first hit our screens in 2007 but for some reason or other I never got round to finishing it. Seriously watching seasons 5 & 6 of GG has been on my to do list forever! After finishing House back in January I was at a bit of a loss about what to watch next until my bestie reminded me of the awesomeness that is Gossip Girl. So I finally got round to finishing it. And it was awesome. The fashion was drool-worthy and the storylines were ridiculously dramatic. Just the way I like it!

The Duff by Kody Keplinger

I LOVED this book, I read it in one night that's how good it was. I always try to read the book before seeing the film and after seeing the trailer for The Duff I bought the book straight away and just couldn't put it down. It's laugh out loud funny, a little bit sad at times and just a great, easy read. I loved it, and I can't wait to see the film.  Expect a full review of both.

Twinings Intensely Buttermint Tea

We all know that I love my herbal teas. I hold my hands up I'm a bit of a tea addict, and Twinings is my favourite brand. I picked this up in Tesco about a week ago because I'd heard good things and fancied a bit of a change. I'm so glad I did because it is seriously yummy. It tastes like Murray Mints and is delicious. I've not really drunk peppermint tea before, being the dedicated green tea drinker that I am, but if they're all as good as this then I may be a convert. It's really sweet and refreshing with a delicious buttery vanilla aftertaste. I really like it.

Scarletscorchdroppers

I've been reading Jennie's blog for well over a year now and yet have never mentioned it on here, so I thought it's about time I did. I just love it. She writes beautifully and creates the most amazing bakes. I'd be super jealous if I wasn't too busy being so impressed and drooling over the gorgeous photography of the even more gorgeous cakes. Check her out here
