September Goals

September Goals

September is my absolute favourite month. I've never quite got off the school calendar so September always feels like a fresh start. The first page of a brand new notebook. I'll be honest a lot of my September excitement is linked to my love of stationery. Even now, with no school to go to, I find the prospect of September and the stationery I'll inevitably buy incredibly exciting. So with all this new beginning energy in the air, lets talk goals for the month.

Stop using heat on my hair - After years of dyeing and heat styling my poor hair is in a sorry state. It's dry, frazzled and in dire need of some TLC. It's my own fault. Even in lockdown I was firing up the straighteners -  I don't know why I wasn't going anywhere - when I should have been giving my hair a much-needed break. So for this entire month, if not the rest of this year, I will be limiting heat styling to just my fringe so the rest of my hair can have a well deserved break. I'm also considering trying out the Curly Girl Method. Has anyone tried it? Does it actually work?

Get back into swimming - Or maybe this should be brave enough to start swimming again properly. When my local pool reopened I was THRILLED. Swimming was one of the things I missed most during lockdown, to the point where the smell of bleach when cleaning the bathroom almost made me nostalgic for the smell of chlorine. Almost. I really couldn't wait to get back in the pool. Swimming is so good for me both physically and mentally, but then the reality of public transport - I'm still too nervy to use it - and being around other humans kicked in and the thrill wore off. I can't say I find the prospect of a 40 minute walk there and back particularly appealing either. However, I've finally found a form of exercise I really enjoy doing and I don't want to give up on it. I've been a few times and as long as I can find a way that I feel comfortable and safe to keep going I will. But I am nervy lads. Really nervy.

GET INTO A GOOD  ROUTINE - This is hardly a new goal as it has made an appearance in nearly all of my monthly goals posts since April. I always start off really well but then it goes to shit, I just can't seem to stick to anything for a more than a couple of weeks. It's so frustrating because I thrive on having a good, steady routine. Much like a toddler I need to know what I'm doing and when I'm doing it in order for me to be happy in my day to day. Otherwise I just get lost and I don't really know what to do with myself.

During lockdown, time became this weird, amorphous thing, that I was never quite able to keep track of. Is it 9am or 4pm? What's Tuesday? When are we? I just don't know anymore. It's got to the point where time is no longer a concept I subscribe to. Why would I?

This time however I have a cunning plan. Recently on twitter @SabinaStent shared the writing schedule of renowned scifi author Ursula LeGuin. Inspired by that post, I'm going to map out my idea of a perfect day; what I want to do, when I want to do it, everything and then just try and stick to it. It sounds rigid and ridiculous to try and timetable your life, I know that and I know that I'm giving off some big Monica Geller energy, but I'm hoping it will give me the boost I need to get myself back in a really good routine. Sidenote: I swear I'm fun to be around... I don't care about coasters. At all.

Sort out my sleeping habits - My erratic sleeping pattern is the reason I can't get into a good routine. Again, I'm blaming lockdown, it's because it's lockdown's fault. But since lockdown my sleeping habits have been all over the show. It's a struggle for me to fall asleep at night, it's a struggle to for me to get up in the morning. And everything suffers, because I'm sleeping through the times that I tend to be most productive - first thing in the morning/mid evening - and it's frustrating. So from now on it's earlier bed times and earlier rise times. Someone pass me the Horlicks/and or a very, very strong cup of tea.

What are your goals for the month?
