Music, as you’ll all know, is the major (teehee) love of my life. As pretentious as that sounds - I know, I know unbearably - it’s absolutely true. There’s nothing I love more. Except discovering new, or new to me, music. Here’s five of the songs I am loving right now.
I saw Paris Youth Foundation, supporting The Xcerts at The Garage in Islington, at the beginning of April and completely fell in love with their delicious brand of indie pop-rock. If You Wanna, the song that catapulted them from Soundcloud to Reading - that’s true, btw, how cool is that?! - is an absolute banger. It sounds deceptively like summertime and happy, carefree memories, due to an insanely catchy guitar hook and an optimistic song structure, but heartbreaking lyrics tell the story of love gone wrong. It’s gorgeous! The lyrics I’ll save you/ If you save me hit me right in the heart.
Don’t you just love rediscovering songs you’ve forgotten all about but at one point were obsessed with? Honestly, It’s one of my greatest pleasures. Here’s To Us was my jam in 2012! I loved it then, I love it now. A celebratory anthem for all us fucks up, Here's To Us is a testament to perseverance and survival. I've listened to this song in all its iterations many, many times, but this version, with it's sweet and gentle melody, juxtaposed against a frankly superb guest appearance from Slash (!) combined with fantastically rocky vocals from both Lzzy Hale and guests, is my very favourite. I love it!
Having just seen The Xcerts (vlog coming soon) I'm still in that post-gig honeymoon phase where I can't actually stop listening to them. It was such a good gig. Anyway, Kevin Costner is the song I keep coming back to, even though they didn't actually play it. Weird, right? This inexplicably named track is haunting and beautiful, with some of the most relatable, and heartbreaking lyrics about bad relationships that I've ever heard. If love is warm then why am I so cold?/If this is love then I can never know. Just typing that made me well up, seriously. It's so beautiful. And that's before I even touch on the epic guitar playing, the pounding drums and just the general awesomeness of everything about this song. I love it so much. In spite of the name. It's just beautiful.
I didn’t think there was anything left in the Fleetwood Mac back catalogue for me to discover, let alone fall completely in love with, I was wrong. Enter Storms, one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever happened across while spring cleaning. In the three or so weeks since it came on on my Amazon Echo, Storms has taken over my life. In a good way. I’ve been playing it on repeat pretty much ever since and have learnt to play (a very, very simplistic version of) it on guitar. It’s stunning. The gentle, melodic guitar combined with Stevie Nicks’ soft, vulnerable and raw vocals, singing the lyrics Never have I been a blue calm sea/I have always been a storm is powerful and intoxicating. Beautiful.
This gorgeous little ditty was brought to my attention by my best friend Jade, who has the best taste in music and is my go to for new music recommendations. Inspired by country music stars Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Emmylou is a beautiful, beautiful country song. It's perfect. The lyrics, the harmonies, the playing, everything about it is gorgeous!
