Happy Monday! I hope you had an absolutely fabulous weekend. One of my first ever blog posts was about my girl crushes (read it here). So I thought I would update the list and tell you all about the ladies who have been inspiring me lately. Of course some of the usual suspects will be making an appearance -in the words of the late, great Whitney I will always love you JLaw! So without further ado and in no particular order... 

Mindy Kaling

She is my spirit animal. She is so kick ass I love her. I read Mindy's book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me and Other Concerns (and reviewed it, read it here) not that long ago and it just completely cemented my burgeoning feelings of love for Mindy. I absolutely adored her as the vain and slightly sociopathic Kelly Kapoor in the US adaptation of The Office, and then loved her even more when I found out she was one of the writers AND had written my favourite episode. However before I discovered the amazingness that was The Office I was already an avid viewer of The Mindy Project, the show that Mindy created, writes and stars in. Now there are many reasons why The Mindy Project is amazing. 1. The Delectable Dr. Danny Castellano. 2. It's hilarious. Finally and most importantly, 3. It's a female led comedy, which has proven it's comedic worth. Now before I go off on a feminist tangent very few female led comedies get taken seriously, The Mindy Project and New Girl proving the exception, more often than not sitcoms centred on a female character are usually cancelled (e.g. Suburgatory whose ratings were higher than a lot of the other shows on ABC and yet was still cancelled.)   Mindy is amazing, her shows are amazing! I love her and her Minnie Mouse voice. 

Tessa Altman

I am so gutted that Suburgatory has been cancelled. I love Tessa Altman. She is ballsy and opinionated and loud and has an amazing sense of style. Girl can rock a hat. I love her and I hate that I won't get to see more of her because alas! Suburgatory is no more.  

Jennifer Lawrence

I am madly, irrevocably in girl love with JLaw. In terms of girl crushes she's the one and I don't care that that made me sound like a creepy stalker. She's my spirit animal (I know I already said that about Mindy, can't a girl have 2 spirit animals?) and my hair idol. Not only is she hysterically funny, absurdly talented and stunningly beautiful but she is also an excellent role model. In the insane land that is Hollywood JLaw is considered a 'fat' actress because she refuses to diet. This is ridiculous for many reasons but mostly because she's tiny. She's amazing and her gifs are hilarious. So is this video of her on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (which I also love.) Enjoy!

Karen Gillan

Karen Gillan - I am OBSESSED with KG. She's an amazing actress who rocks some awesome vintage fashion. She was my hair idol before she shaved her head (she still looked amazing! How is that fair?). Not only was she arguably the best Doctor Who companion of all time (it's a toss up between Rose Tyler and Amy Pond) but she was brilliant in Not Another Happy Ending (reviewed it, loved it, read all about it here.) I just think she's amazing and oh so beautiful, only a really gorgeous woman can pull off being bald but Karen Gillan nailed it. I can't wait to see her as the evil and kick ass Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy. I love her. Want to be her.

Rashida Jones

 I like to think that Rashida Jones is the thinking girl's crumpet. She is the perfect mold to pour oneself into if you want to be a sexy, smart girl- which I do. Rashida (yeah we're on a first name basis) is responsible for the amazing Celeste & Jesse Forever - one of my favourite films, if you have netflix watch this immediately! -  and played the wonderful Ann Perkins in Parks & Rec (which I also love). She is so funny and clever and pretty. She's awesome. 

Lea Michele

I can't even begin to express the admiration and respect I have for Lea Michele.  Above all else she's a fighter and a survivor.  Since tragically losing her boyfriend Cory Monteith in July of last year she's had to deal with her grief with the whole world looking on and judging her. She has handled the situation with dignity and grace and I think that she is so brave and amazing. She is insanely talented and hardworking. I love her. I think she's a total inspiration.  

Jennifer Aniston

I am 90% sure that Jennifer Aniston was my first ever girl crush way back when. Who didn't adore her as Rachel in Friends? I think she is the most beautiful woman in the world and the way she is portrayed in the media as a desperate, baby crazy divorcee (erm...Justin Theroux anyone?) is disgusting. She is talented, beautiful and awesome. 

Beyonce

  I wrote a post ages ago about my love for Beyonce (read it here). She is beautiful, determined, super-talented and one half of the world's greatest power couple. It is not possible to dislike Beyonce. She is Queen of the World.  

Leslie Knope

Another lady of Parks & Rec fame. Leslie Knope is one of, if not the most positive female role model on television ever. She is determined, hilarious, a feminist, driven, ambitious and I think she is just the coolest person. I wish I was that awesome, I also wish I could only eat waffles and look that good. I'm so sad that the next season of Parks and Rec will be the last because I will miss Leslie Knope and her amazingness. Love her. And I also love the insanely talented Amy Poehler who plays her. 

Tina Fey

Oh Tina Fey! Who doesn't love Tina Fey? Not only is she responsible for the brilliant 30 Rock, she is also responsible for the even more brilliant Mean Girls (the high point of Lindsay Lohan's career let's be honest.) She is incredibly funny and clever and I think that's an amazing combination!

Tina you are so wise! 10 years on and Mean Girls is still awesome. So is Tina Fey.

Rik Mayall

I was so upset when I found out about Rik Mayall's passing this afternoon. Now I am fully aware that Rik Mayall was a man but it felt only right to include him in this list as he is someone I have admired all my life. When I was very young my favourite film was Drop Dead Fred (excellent parenting Dad!) starring the hilarious Rik Mayall. As I got older I became a huge fan of The Young Ones and Bottom both of which he wrote and starred in alongside his comedy partner Adrian Edmonsdon, I think he was a truly excellent comedian and actor and I'm very sad about his death. RIP Rik Mayall. 

So this isn't really just a list of my girl crushes anymore, more like a list of people I admire which is predominately made up of women. However this is just the tip of the Girl Crush iceberg. The full list is way more extensive and includes Emma Watson, Emma Stone (I love my Emmas!), Blake Lively, Tom Hiddleston (I am well aware that Mr Hiddleston is not a girl, I just love him so much that he had to be on my list of crushes regardless of gender). I am also crushing on a lot of Beauty Bloggers at the moment: ViviannaDoesMakeup, Lily Pebbles, Essie Button & Sammi from The Beauty Crush to name but a few.

I am back with my second installment of Friday I'm in Love. This week I have been loving…

Jimmy Fallon - Many an hour has been lost surfing youtube for videos from The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. I am so gutted that we don't get it over here because he is absolutely hilarious! When I was writing my dissertation, and stressing so badly that I wanted to cry like all the time, I would quickly click over to youtube to watch a Jimmy Fallon vid and laugh my troubles away for roughly 5 minutes before going back to stressing about feminism. I was first introduced to Jimmy Fallon when a link for his lip sync battle against the one and only Emma Stone appeared in my facebook feed. Ever since then I have become a subscriber on youtube and a regular viewer of his hysterical antics. My personal favourite is his must-see lip sync battle against Paul Rudd, whose Tina Turner is nothing short of magical.

I have been using this for years,it's one of the few products that can keep my untamed mane in check. I use it every other day on soaking wet hair to combat frizz and it works. Two pumps of this on soaking wet hair and my curls are no longer a mad tangle of cherry coloured wire but smooth and shiny. It is a must for anyone with curly hair. Having said that it is a must for anyone with frizz prone hair, my mum has straight hair and she's used it to eliminate frizz. It's fantastic and it smells nice too.

I bought this over the weekend and it has been on my fingertips ever since. It is the most beautiful pale blue with a smoky grey undertone. It's beautiful.  I love Barry M Nail Paints (I have 35 of them), their range of colours and effects is amazing and the formula is always so gorgeous and easy to use and it lasts a decent amount of time as well.

I bought this last week to counter the unfortunate sheen that Maybelline New York's Dream Satin Liquid Foundation left on my face (read more about that here). Normally I'm not a huge fan of powders, in the past I have found the coverage to be a bit meh and the powders themselves to be a bit cakey. But the coverage on this is really good and it's not at all cakey. I really like it.

I got this free with a magazine about a million years ago and had never used it until yesterday. After a massive spring clean my hands were left so sore and dry and then I found this in my cupboard and thought I would give it a try. It is amazing. Containing organic honey and orange essential oil it smells absolutely gorgeous but left my hands feeling so nourished and soft.

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

(My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick. Sadly this is not my copy, I read it on my ipad but how pretty is it?)

I had been dying to read this for ages, but with the heavy reading that comes with being a third and final year English student it was relegated to the bottom of the pile. It tells the story of Samantha Reed who lives next door to the loud, messy, lovely and massive Garrett family (they have 8 kids). Samantha, the younger of 2 daughters, has been intrigued by the Garrett's for years but has never made any contact with them due to her disapproving mother, who is both a state senator and a complete bitch. But then Samantha meets Jase Garrett and they fall in love.  However there is a twist, which I won't give away because it is really good and I think you should go and read it. This is not just another YA love story, it is incredibly funny and really sad at some points but it is so, so good and best of all it's the first of a series, with the second one due out in 2015. I loved it and I will definitely be re-reading it (partly because I am totally in love with Jase!)

2 Stars & A Wish is a new weekly feature on rocknroses. Every Wednesday I will be reviewing/raving about two beauty products I love and talking about one that disappointed me.

My skin has been so awful recently, mostly due to lack of sleep, an abundance of stress and the worst attack of hayfever that I've ever had. The near constant eye watering has left the delicate skin under my eyes puffy, red, swollen and unbelievably sore. It's just been terrible, leaving me desperate to find something that will fix it and make the blackheads and redness go away FOREVER. Sadly no such magical product exists as of yet and if it did it would cost an absolute bomb. Anyway this serum acts as a preventative rather than a cure. Even so I think it's awesome. It's a silky smooth serum that feels absolutely beautiful on the skin. As an oil-free formula it promises to, and I quote, 'unblock pores and clear excess sebum to give smoother, blemish free skin.' and as far as my experience goes it totally does that. I so love it when stuff does what it says it will. You'd think it would be a given but it so rarely is. I picked this up in Boots over the weekend for £11 (usually it costs £16 but I had a voucher) and have been using it every day, applying it before moisturising but after washing my face. Since I've been using it my face is definitely clearer and smoother. I think it's amazing.

I can't emphasize how awful my skin has been of late, my dissertation really did a number on me (I know, I know I can't keep blaming everything on my dissertation, last time I promise). I picked this up in T.K. Maxx a couple of weeks ago for the ridiculously low price of £2.50, and tried it for the first time last night. Already there is a noticeable difference in my skin, my face is clearer, my pores look smaller and it left my skin feeling smooth and slightly tingly. Containing Charcoal, Dragon Fruit and Cinnamon Extract - ingredients known for their awesome skin clearing properties - this face mask targets spots, blackheads (my main problem) and clogged pores. It has quite a thick consistency and looks a bit like cement which I admit is a little bit off putting, especially when I forgot that I was wearing it. I got one hell of a shock when I looked in the mirror and my face was grey but it kinda smells like Christmas which is amazing. I am so impressed and am sure it will be making a weekly appearance in my skincare routine. I love it.

My first impressions of this foundation were not good, it promises a 100% poreless look and air-brush perfection but it doesn't really deliver. Initially I thought it left me looking really shiny, but then I realised that because my skin is super dry I usually have to moisturise before putting on a base and this was causing the shininess. So I tried it without moisturising and the finish was much more matte but I still found it to be lacking. The formula is really thick and doesn't blend very well and the coverage isn't great either. I was so disappointed because I had heard good things but it just left me feeling a bit...meh. Obviously I will still use it because I cannot stand waste but I need to use a lot of Collection Lasting Perfection Ultimate Wear Powder in 02 Medium to make it work for me, which is such a faff. 

I think in future I will stick to L'Oreal Paris True Match foundation in Rose Vanilla because it is my absolute favourite foundation. It is just the best and does exactly what it says it will. It is super-blendable and matches my skin tone and texture perfectly and has a built in SPF. I am in love with it. Sadly I have run out, hence the Maybelline.

I kept the bottle because that's the kind of loser I am but I will be repurchasing the next time I have money.

As part of my quest to establish order and regularity on my blog I will now be posting every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Having said that I am aware that today is in fact Tuesday. I was fully intending to post yesterday but once again life got in the way and I ended up spending 5 hours on the phone trying to pay for my graduation tickets. It was a total nightmare! ERGH! Anyway enough about that, today I thought I would tell you about my weekend at the seaside. My aunty and her partner have recently moved to Lowestoft - the most easterly town in Britain according to the signs that were literally everywhere - where she's opened an art gallery and coffee shop (called The Coconut Loft if anyone's interested.) This weekend was the opening so me, my mum, step-dad, sister, niece and nephew piled in the car to go and help. After a relatively easy drive up (I assume, I wouldn't know not being able to drive) mum and Terry rolled up their sleeves and jumped into the fray that was my aunty's coffee shop. With 2 children under 6 in tow me and my sister decided to make ourselves scarce and went to explore the seafront with my niece and nephew, meaning fairground rides, ice cream and 2p machines galore.

I am so proud of this picture, I think it's lovely.

After a long day of eating ice cream, walking in the sunshine and exploring the town of Lowestoft with my sister and the kids we went back to our hotel to relax for an hour before getting ready to go out and meet the family for dinner. We went to the Hatfield Hotel where my mum was staying, which was absolutely beautiful, and had dinner there. I ordered The Americano, which was a thick, juicy beef burger absolutely smothered in the yummiest barbecue pulled pork. To be completely honest I'm not a huge fan of red meat and I'm also a really fussy eater so I only ordered the burger because it was the one thing on the menu that I thought I would eat. OH MY GOSH am I glad I did because it was honestly the best burger I have ever had! I am so gutted I forgot to take a picture because it was absolutely gorgeous. So yummy. The only downside to the evening was the fact that me and my sister were staying in a different hotel to everyone else due to a last minute booking and we had to leave early to put the kids to bed.

Sunday was the opening day for The Coconut Loft. After a yummy cooked breakfast by the sea we headed to the coffee shop to meet and greet customers. At one o'clock my uncle, his fiancee and their brood (they have 5 kids) turned up and we decided to take the kids, all 7 of them, to the funfair by the seafront.

I absolutely love fairground rides. I love rollercoasters, sheer drops, loop-the-loops I'll go on anything, I just love them. However when I was 7 I went on a ride at the fair that I was too small for and I honestly thought I was going to fall out and die. I spent the whole time crying and screaming my head off, not from exhilaration but in the certain knowledge that death was coming. Obviously I was scarred by the experience, even though I love rollercoasters and scary rides I have never gone on that ride since.

This was that ride.

UNTIL Sunday when my uncle inadvertently taught me a valuable life lesson. My younger cousin was adamant that she had to go on this ride and that my uncle and aunty were going on it too. At first I flat out refused to go anywhere near the thing, despite my cousin's pleas, but then my uncle said something incredibly, and unexpectedly, wise. He said: 'Prove to yourself that you can. You might hate it but you'll have done it.' So with these wise words ringing in my ears I screwed up my courage, kicked off my shoes and went on the damn ride. I can't even tell you how happy I am that I did. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be and the view was stunning.

I got off the ride with shaking hands and the most violent butterflies I'd ever had and went back to the coffee shop. After walking through the art gallery and looking at all the paintings, I fell completely in love with, and was bought, this painting by a local artist.

So that was my weekend, it was totally exhausting but so much fun and so nice to get to see all my family at the seaside. I'm really annoyed that I didn't take more pictures but I did have my hands full helping my sister with the kids. Hope you lot had a lovely weekend.

After just over a year of chaotic, sporadic on-off blogging I have decided that the time is ripe to establish order. And by order I mean scheduled blogging. Introducing Friday I'm in Love. Named for the song by The Cure of the same name (listen to it here) from now on every Friday will be Friday I'm in Love where, funnily enough, I will be posting about the things I love that week. These could be anything from makeup (natch) to music, books, food, films, tv, other blogs...you get the gist.

This week I went home for a week of rest and relaxation, before going back to Bedford and the stress of moving and job hunting that awaits. My week has been full of shopping, make up, lazy days and yummy food and I can't wait to share it with all of you. So without a further a do let the inaugural Friday I'm in Love commence!

Matte Nail Paint by Barry M in Cancun & Rhossilli -  I have never really been a fan of matte nail polish, not being overly keen on the chalkboard effect. However when in Boots on Tuesday I stumbled across Barry's M new matte nail collection for the summer and fell in love with these two beauties.Whilst I am still getting used to the rather curious matte effect the colours are absolutely gorgeous and very summery.The formula, as with all Barry M nail paints, was very easy to use being lovely and creamy and only taking two coats to become opaque, however it did only last two days before chipping. Despite that the colours were so lovely that I will be reaching for them again.

Whilst it is for all skin types I have incredibly sensitive skin and have found that some other eye make up removers made the delicate skin around my eyes sore, sometimes even causing a rash. This is incredibly gentle on my skin whilst still removing all my eye make up, I love a smokey eye so it has quite the challenge. However it does have quite a greasy texture that I am not overly fond of BUT I still think it's an excellent product.

Herbal Essences Bee Strong Strengthening Intensive Mask with Honey and Apricot Extracts for Damaged Hair - My step mum gave me this hair mask after the ends of my hair became really dry from hair dye and straighteners and all the bad stuff I shouldn't do to my hair but do anyway. On Wednesday night I massaged a handful of this gorgeous smelling goop into my hair, focusing particularly on the ends, and left it for 35 minutes before rinsing it off.  Since then there has been a noticeable difference in my hair, rather than being dry and brittle it now feels stronger but also really soft and smooth. This hair mask worked wonders with my dry and style damaged hair and will definitely be making a weekly appearance in my haircare routine.

The Red Necklace by Sally Gardner read by Tom Hiddleston (swoon!) - I have a lot of trouble sleeping. I grew up in a pub and because of this I can't sleep in total silence. Herein lies the problem if I put the tv on then I'll watch it and it then takes me hours to drift off. If I have music on I'll sing along and get super pumped up and won't sleep. So I was at something of a loss and then someone, I forget who, suggested audiobooks. Now usually I spend my sleepless nights reading so this seemed like the ideal solution. Intrigued I downloaded The Red Necklace by Sally Gardner read by Tom Hiddleston. It is no secret that I am a lover of Mr. Hiddleston, being a fully paid up member of Loki's Army. The combination of the story - from what I remember it was good - and Tom Hiddleston's beautiful voice - which honestly sounds like melted chocolate and really good sex - lulled me into the first good night's sleep I had had in a long time. I will definitely be downloading more.

And finally I thought I would end with my song of the week (another new feature of my blog). Matchbox Twenty's How Far We've Come. I only discovered this song about a week ago in a film trailer, I forget which one, and after downloading it I have been listening to it pretty much constantly. The lyrics are just really apt for what's been going on in my life at the moment. Now that I have finished university and still have no idea exactly what it is that I want to do with my life I am in a state of flux not knowing what my next move is. Like the title suggests this song is about how far I've come, and reminds me that in the past four years I have changed and achieved so much, more than I thought possible and it's a nice, albeit very scary, feeling.

I am in the final weeks of my last year of uni and I am stressed beyond words. I mean seriously it has gotten to the stage where I am no longer sleeping because sleep is not a productive use of my time. The one thing keeping me going is the fact that in just over a week it will be over, the thought of which makes me both ecstatically happy and devastated at the same time. On Wednesday I handed in my dissertation and the feeling of relief was so intense, but sadly short lived with another essay due in today, an exam next week and yet another essay after that.

However I thought whilst I had a moment to spare (and it literally is just a moment) that I would catch up with you lovely lot and share the list of things I am looking forward to once it's all over (yay/sob).

Plucking my eyebrows - I am aware that this is such a weird thing to be excited about, but normally I am incredibly strict with the upkeep of my eyebrows. Due to my incredibly heavy workload most of my normal routines that keep me looking human have been left by the wayside as I have been struggling to meet deadlines and as such my eyebrows are reminiscent of Charlie Simpson in his good old Busted days. I cannot wait to attack them with a pair of tweezers until they look normal again. I do not enjoy looking like a she-wolf. I'm sure they're not as bad as I think but as far as I'm concerned they are not acceptable.

Binge watching Seasons 2 and 3 of Once Upon a Time - I discovered Once Upon a Time rather late in the game, way back in December I obsessively watched the first season but from January onwards I got distracted by work and all 9 seasons of The US Office. Since then I have watched season 2 every now and then but I haven't had the time to sit down and watch every episode. So the minute my final essay has been handed I will be hibernating in my room with chocolate and cookies until the credits roll on the season 3 finale. I will also be binge watching Suburgatory.

Spring cleaning and reorganizing my room - Again this seems a strange thing to be excited about but ever since my dissertation completely took over my life my room has been a total mess.Whilst I am not the tidiest of people I do have my standards and at the moment my room looks like it has been hit by Hurricane Lauren, who has blown in grabbed what she needed before heading back to the library, leaving mess and devastation in her wake. I honestly cannot wait to get my room back to it's tidyish glory.

Watching Dirty Dancing - I don't think this one really needs an explanation. This just needs to happen soon.

Finishing the Divergent Trilogy/Re-reading The Hunger Games and reading just about everything else I haven't been able to - I am an avid reader and I absolutely hate it when I can't read the things I want too. I can't wait to take my kindle to the embankment and just read in the sunshine.

Getting back into a normal sleeping pattern - I miss sleep, so much. The fact that I am awake right now at 1:30 in the morning rather than happily sleeping is just agonizing.

Dying my hair - I truly hate dying my hair, it is boring, it takes forever, the fumes are poison and unbearable but alas, it is a necessary evil. Currently I have an inch of ash blonde hair trying to force it's way through all the red and I hate that too so I cannot wait to daub on the dye and make my roots history.

Taking a sunlit walk down by the riverside - I totally just made myself sound like Huckleberry Finn, proving that my three years studying English have not been for naught. The River Ouse is my happy place, it is just so beautiful and peaceful. I haven't been down there properly in so long. I can't wait to get down there.

Earning some money - again this is pretty self explanatory. I am so broke!

BLOGGING - I miss it so much!

One thing I'm not looking forward to is leaving, whilst the last 6 weeks have been an unrelenting bitch the last 3 years have been amazing and I am dreading leaving it behind.

Just a quick post today to let you know that I am still around, despite my prolonged absence from the blogging world. The end of my third and final year of uni is in sight (sob) which means that I am absolutely drowning in uni work at the moment. I can't even tell you how many late nights I've spent in the library frantically typing and freaking out. What with trying to get my Dissertation finished, revising for exams and everything I haven't had time to think let alone blog. Still... I promise I will be back with a bang come June/July.

I've got loads of new ideas to shake my blog up a bit. Can't wait for you guys to see it. Until then lovely people I will sadly remain absent, but I promise I'll be back soon.

Today I thought I would review the film Not Another Happy Ending starring the beautiful Karen Gillan and the equally beautiful Stanley Weber.

 

Not Another Happy Ending tells the story of writer Jane Lockhart; who following the immense success of her first novel is suffering from writer's block whilst writing her second. Jane's obnoxious yet exquisitely gorgeous publisher Tom believes this is due to her happiness so makes it his mission to make her life a misery. In doing so Tom (who's French by the way, ooh la la) starts to realise that he is love with her. The problem is Jane finishing the novel means that there won't be a reason for Tom to see her anymore (that and Jane's dick boyfriend, the aptly named Willy).

Not only was this film both funny and clever with some incredibly romantic moments, it also featured some amazing vintage fashion rocked by the fabulous Miss Gillan and an excellent soundtrack (particularly the song Crash Land by Twin Atlantic)

I won't give away the ending because I think everyone should watch it but it is amazing. I've watched it repeatedly and it is now one of my favourite films. If ever a film was underrated this one is. Karen Gillan is amazing as the tortured and incredibly talented Jane and Stanley Weber is wonderful and gorgeous as the slightly mean-spirited but unbelievably sexy Tom. I love RomComs but they're something of a guilty pleasure because they can be so cheesy but Not Another Happy Ending isn't at all, it was brilliant. If you haven't seen it you can watch the trailer below but trust me y0u're gonna wanna watch it.
