Let's Get Real: Feeling Lost

Let's Get Real: Feeling Lost

I was going to tell you all about the drugstore's greatest handcream (Garnier's Intense 7 Days Restoring Hand Cream for Dry & Chapped Hands just fyi) but I  have sat down to write today's post so many times and the words are just not coming. I have no idea what it is that I want to say. I think it's fair to say that there are some very important things in life that I'm short of, confidence and hair that doesn't make me look like Ronald McDonald for example, BUT words are not normally one of them. Lately though... I'm a bit lost. For words and just in life in general.

I finished uni about three weeks ago and I haven't got a clue what I to do. I don't even know what I want to do. And it's got to the point now where I've actually run out of diversionary tactics. Life is looming, large and terrifying, in front of me and I have no idea what to do with it. I just don't know.

The thing is at this point there is no avoiding the question. It's everywhere I go. So, what do you want to do with your life? And the answer is I absolutely don't know. I just don't, I have no idea and that thought is TERRIFYING. It's so scary!

In all honesty all I want to do is to get paid to go travelling and spend my time in my pyjamas, writing about make up,  surfing youtube, reading whatever I want, whenever I want and eating bad food, with occasional visits to the gym. That's what I want! That's all I want.

We shall see.

So that's my quarter life crisis. If anyone else is experiencing something like this please let me know by commenting below, on twitter or by dropping me an email at lolarocknroses@gmail.com I really hate feeling like I'm going through this alone.

The Weekly Round Up #4: Hot Cloth Cleansers, The Balm & Nineties Movies

The Weekly Round Up #4: Hot Cloth Cleansers, The Balm & Nineties Movies

Read post
Hi Guys! I hope everyone's had a good week! I've been doing a load of over time at work, I have a very expensive make up habit to support, so this is the first opportunity I've had to sit down and round up my week. Lets do this!

No 7 Radiance Boosting Hot Cloth Cleanser - I'm not normally a huge fan of No 7, I mean I have a few bits but nothing I really, really love. That was until I found this hot cloth cleanser at the back of my beauty drawer, where it's been lurking for years,  and I've very quickly become obsessed. It is such a nice cleanser. I've been using it every night and it is so nice. It cleanses the skin so gently but really thoroughly as well and because it's hypo-allergenic even super sensitive skinned lasses like myself can use it. I just massage a pump of the cleanser into my skin, pop a hot cloth onto my face for 5 minutes before removing the excess. It has made my skin feel so soft and nourished and it just feels really luxurious to lie back and relax while it works it's magic. I really like it but, sadly, it looks like Boots don't sell this exact cleanser anymore (I told you I'd had it years) BUT No 7 do have a Beautiful Skin Hot Cloth Cleanser that looks really similar, you can get that here

The Balm Balm Voyage Vol. 2 Pallet - I literally picked this up today, as in like 4 hours ago, and am that excited about it, it just had to feature in this week's weekly round up. The Balm is a brand I've heard of but never tried anything from so when I saw this in the beauty aisle of T.K. Maxx (Side note: beauty lovers definitely check out the beauty aisle in your local T.K. Maxx. I always find such good stuff in mine!) I was intrigued, and after a quick nosy at the inside I knew I had to have it. First of all I LOVE the packaging, it is so cute and fun and vintage looking. I love it. Now I haven't had the chance to play with this properly yet but from just a cursory glance I can tell you that this would be a fabulous pallet for travelling, hmmm... maybe that's why it's called The Balm Voyage pallet, not just because the packaging is super sleek and compact and would travel well but because it has EVERYTHING. It has 2 cheek & lip tints, 2 blushes, a bronzer, a highlighter and 9 eyeshadows, with a nice mix of matte and shimmer shades. I will be doing a proper review soon, so keep an eye out for that, but so far I am very impressed and can see myself getting a LOT of use out of this. Plus it normally retails at £32, a fairly steep price tag I think we can all agree, but I got it for £19.99, bonus!

*Blog Update: I've since found it cheaper on amazon, you can pick it up by following the above link, don't say I never treat you ;)*

I've been loving really silly comedies from the 90s this week. Like a lot. I was already a huge Wayne's World fan (of both 1 & 2) because hello it is awesome, super quotable and ridiculously funny! Garth is my spirit animal! If I was a guy that is who I would be, well a cross between him and Nick from New Girl. But Chasing Amy was new to me.  I was told to watch it by a friend from work and I loved it. It's part of Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse, so if you like Clerks or Mallrats, anything that features Jay and Silent Bob, you will definitely like Chasing Amy. It's really funny with a few WTF?! moments but it's actually quite sweet as well and is a really good story. I liked it a lot. I watched it twice. I definitely recommend it, both are on netflix and are well worth checking out if you're in the mood for some giggles.

Ridiculous snuggly slippers

Wooly hats, mittens, jumpers and boots

Giant coats

Listening to the sound of the rain

Tea. All of the tea

Binge watching tv boxsets because it's literally too cold to do anything else

How to Survive Freshers Week!

How to Survive Freshers Week!
Tuesday, 22 September 2015
Read post

I thought, somewhat fittingly now that I've finally finished, that I should definitely talk to you guys about uni. Specifically how to survive freshers week for those of you heading to university for the first time and are feeling a little nervous... believe me I've been there. So here are some of my pearls of wisdom for all you lovelies who have started/are starting uni.

Take A LOT of pictures but more importantly BE in a lot of pictures

I was the chief photographer in my group of friends so there are tons of pictures from my time at uni. There's just one small problem I'm not in a lot of them. Seriously only 2 pictures exist of me and my bestest uni friends all together and 1 of them would be lovely if it wasn't for another friend standing right in front of me, effectively blocking me out of the picture (fail!) and the other one is really, really blurry (epic fail!).

Looking back now I really regret that I'm not in more pictures so take and be in as many pictures as you can. You won't regret it.

Be brave, and also friendly

It's okay to be nervous, everyone is! But be brave and introduce yourself to people and branch out, you're not necessarily gonna be besties with the people you live with in halls. I certainly wasn't, the people I was closest to actually lived in the block next door and I was constantly in and out. Also get to know people on your course. I was on the same course as two people from the block next door and we just kinda stuck together, we didn't really get to know the other people until our second year and it was such a shame because there were some really lovely people doing the same course.

Make it feel like home

If this means taking your teddy bear(s) with you then DO IT! (I clearly did!) If it means stringing up fairy light and blutacking photos to the walls DO IT! If it means only wearing pyjamas for the year you're there (this is pretty much what I did) then DO IT! You're in halls for a year, and paying a lot to be there, make it yours. Just make sure you clear up for room inspections. Speaking of ALWAYS tidy up after yourself, especially in communal areas. Nothing starts a fight quicker than people just leaving their washing up around for everyone else to deal with. Don't be that person. That person sucks!

Keep a note of everything

Uni is where most people are living on their own for the first time and it is so much fun BUT one of the annoying things about living by yourself is dealing with the landlord, even after you've moved out. Me and my flatmates lost quite a lot of our deposit on our flat because we didn't make a note of any problems in the property. Write down everything and keep track of dates, how, who, what, why, when, where etc. Don't end up losing money because of something that isn't your fault.

Emotionally prepare yourself for early morning fire alarms! And fire alarms in general

They are the actual worst. At my uni they tested the fire alarms in halls at 7:00am on a Tuesday morning, our Student Nights were Mondays and Wednesdays and I'm sure they did this on purpose. The worst fire drill was when the Student Union arranged a night out at Oceana in Milton Keynes and our entire campus went. We didn't get back until 4 in the morning and the facilities team arranged a fire drill for 6:15am... it was horrific! And we weren't allowed to go back to bed until 7:00... that was not a good day. Also when you're living in halls a lot of people are cooking for themselves for the first time and fire alarms happen A LOT. Be prepared, it's not fun but it happens.

Try new things even if it's something completely different

One thing I really regret is not getting more involved in the social side. Don't get me wrong I went out a lot but I wish I'd joined in with more of the societies and stuff. My uni was a sports uni, and being the least sporty person ever and incredibly clumsy as well,  I didn't get involved with anything and I do feel like I really missed out because of it. So definitely try something new, it might surprise you how much you enjoy it.

Go to everything

I was really lucky when I started uni because it was the last year before the fees were raised, I'm ashamed to say I've skipped a lecture or two in my time. But just remember you're paying hundreds of pounds an hour for the privilege so you might as well make the most of it, even if it means turning up to a lecture hungover (guilty!

Prepare

Okay so this one sounds really boring but I can tell you from experience that there is actually nothing worse than having to blag it through a seminar because you haven't done the reading. It is the most awkward thing ever, you know you haven't done the reading, the lecturer knows you haven't and it is so uncomfortable. It is so much better to just get the reading done as soon as you can and be able to talk about it and actually know what you're talking about. It's boring but necessary, get it done and then relaaax! The same applies for assignments, get them done. I've had many an all nighter in the library trying to get an assignment finished and it's a stress filled nightmare. Just do yourself a favour and get it done.

Always look in the library before buying your course books

In my first year I bought all my course books,  when they were all in the uni library where I could have borrowed them for free. 9 times out of 10 the library will already have a copy so definitely check it out before you part with your cash.

I have loads more tips for you guys but I feel like I've been waffling on for hours and hours so I'll be quick. Don't feel pressured into doing anything you don't want to. I didn't really drink when I started uni and it was fine. No one cared. I still had the best time and danced like a maniac but with the added bonus that I saved loads of money on nights out. Make a budget and (try) to stick to it. I know I can't talk I'm terrible with money, but if you try to budget then at least you'll know where your money is going and what your doing with it. Stock up on cold medicine and tissues. Freshers flu is inevitable and inescapable, prepare for it. When you're stocking up on medicine also stock up on stuff like toilet roll, toothpaste, washing powder and shower gel before you go to uni, it doesn't go off, and usually parents are more than happy to buy these things for you, leaving you to spend your money on more exciting things... like nights out or in my case make up. Go to your Freshers Fayre, there are always freebies, never underestimate the value of a free pen, and pizza.  But most importantly have fun, enjoy every second because honestly it goes by in a heartbeat. Blink and you'll miss it.

I hope you guys found this helpful. If there's anything I missed let me know in the comments below, on twitter or by dropping me an email at lolarocknroses@gmail.com. Also check out my instagramfacebook, bloglovin', snapchat - search lolarocknroses - & pinterest for updates.

For anyone starting uni this year GOOD LUCK! And have the best time.

(Late) August Favourites 2015

(Late) August Favourites 2015

Read post
HELLO LOVELY PEOPLE! Long time no blog! I am so happy to be back I can't even tell you. After a nightmarish few weeks, including a nasty and badly timed bout of acid reflux disease (don't ask... it's not pleasant), my dissertation's due date, thank God that's over, and a rather nasty cold (not what I need) my dissertation is finally handed in and, even though I'm laid up in bed with a cold,  I'm now free to read what I want to read - I'm so excited!!! - and write about make up. Hurray! From now on it's business as usual on my little corner of the internet. So on that note, even though at this point they are ridiculously late, here are my August Favourites.

(Sorry the swatches haven't come out great, this was the best of a bad lot.)

The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Lotion - My skin hasn't been great for a while but lately, probably due to stress and eating a bit too much sugary stuff, my skin has been the worst I've ever seen it. I'm not even joking it is awful! I was using The Body Shop's Tea Tree Skin Clearing Lotion throughout August to get rid of any nasties lurking on my skin to prevent new spots forming and it has really helped. Designed with oily/blemish prone skin in mind this lotion lightly hydrates, mattifies and helps to clear the skin. With the primary ingredient being tea tree oil, a super ingredient known for it's spot fighting and anti-bacterial properties, it leaves the skin feeling fresh and clean and visibly clearer. My skin isn't oily at all, in fact it's the opposite. I have very sensitive, occasionally dry skin but I do breakout a lot and I have found this definitely gives me clearer looking skin without being too harsh. I really like it. I only have the 15ml tube at the moment but it's lasted really well, and I will definitely be picking up the full size when this runs out.

Maybelline Master Sculpt Contouring Pallet in 01 Light Medium - I picked this up a while back (read more here) and have been using it on a daily basis ever since because it's so good. The contour is the perfect ashy toned brown for us pal gals, it just looks so natural and shadow like on the skin. I can really carve out cheek bones and it doesn't look like I've gone the full Kardashian or too overboard. It just looks really natural. I love it BUT the highlighter is my favourite. I've never been a fan of powder highlighters, I've not had great experiences with them to be honest. The ones I've tried have either been too shimmery/glittery or the texture has been too chalky or not easy to blend but this one is amazing. Finely milled, easily blendable and it gives such a beautiful, subtle radiance to the skin without being too in your face. I've been using it to set my under eye concealer and it works wonders. It really brightens up my, very dark, under eye area and makes my skin look really fresh and glowy, like it's lit from within. I. Love. It.

Natural Collection Moisture Shine Lipstick in Raspberry - This lipstick was my go to throughout August (read more about that here). Natural Collection is not a brand I've ever really tried before but I'm a really big fan of this lipstick, I have two because it's awesome. The formula is not the best, it's very rich and moisturising but it doesn't want to hang around for very long. I've got round this by dusting some translucent powder over the top. I just love it. The colour is a super pretty berry toned pink that is right in my wheelhouse and suitable for everyday and this makes it more than worth the hassle of reapplying every couple of hours.

Pinch Me by The Barenaked Ladies - I've loved this song for ages but it was one I'd almost completely forgotten about until it came on when my iPod was on shuffle. I'm a really big fan of the Barenaked Ladies, I actually saw them at Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park about 4 years ago and they were amazing. They wrote a song on stage. It was incredible! Pinch Me is one of their lesser known songs, although Scrubs fans would have heard it in the background of an episode, it sounds so happy but if you really listen to the lyrics it's quite sad. I love it. Give it a listen and let me know what you think.
