Read post
Last year I had about 5 or 6 posts just for my yearly favourites. This year I'm keeping it simple, everything beauty related in just one post. So grab yourselves a cup of tea, maybe a snack, because things are about to get long and rambly.

Makeup & Nails

MAC Eyeshadow in Satin Taupe  -  Shadow pot - £13.00, refill pan - £10.00. Both available from MAC

Well Hello Gorgeous! Satin Taupe is a MAC classic for a reason people! When I first started building up my MAC palette Satin Taupe was the first to make it's way into my basket, why? Because it's bloody lovely that's why. A lilac-y, silver-y taupe that can be smoked up for a super sexy evening look or simply washed over the lid for a more subtle daytime look. It's super versatile and super stunning. Well done MAC!

Seventeen Phwoarr Paint Heavy Duty Under Eye Concealer in Fair  - £4.99 (currently on offer, usually £5.49) from boots.com

This concealer has been one of my favourites for a long old time now. I've raved about this concealer and shouted it's praises from the rooftops countless times so I won't bore you with the details. All you need to know is that it gives excellent coverage and lasts really well. It's fabulous.

MAC Eyeshadow in Patina Shadow pot - £13.00, refill pan - £10.00. Both available from MAC

Patina is another MAC classic and a bit of a stunner if we're being honest. Patina is a dreamy, shimmery, rich, toasted golden brown shade that applies beautifully and looks amazing simply applied all over the lid and blended into the crease. It's such a gorgeous colour. It makes me go all hearteyed emoji.

Maybelline have created my perfect mascara, I'm serious, it is incredible. It gives a ton of volume, it lengthens, it's defining. It's long lasting, doesn't flake, doesn't smudge. It. Is. Perfect.

This is such a fab little eyeshadow quad, when I first got it I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do because normally I'm not a fan of pink toned shadows, but these are seriously beautiful. The shadows are pigmented, finely milled, buttery soft in texture and don't crease. They really are amazing, especially at such a low price point. Well done Fleur!

Hutch was having it's moment last summer but is a fairly recent discovery of mine. O EM GEE I can totally see what all the fuss was about. The colour is stunning, a bright and bold pillar box red with a fabulous formula. I'm a big fan of OP's entire collection with Ciaté, they are classic colours done beautifully, but Hutch is my favourite. Simple, but gorgeous.

Maybelline Master Sculpt Contouring Pallette in 01 Light Medium - £6.99 from boots.com

I never used to be a fan of Maybelline. In the past I've found them to be a bit hit and miss, and way more miss than hit to be honest. BUT over the past year they have really upped their game, and now so much of my everyday make up is from Maybelline - I also really, really love the Fit Me Concealer and the Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencils! -This nifty little palette is my go to for light contouring. It has 2 shades, a contour and a highlight. The contour is a light, ashy brown that is perfect for us paler skinned lasses, it also looks really natural on the skin which is a definite plus. The highlighter, however, is the real star. A beautiful, pale, champagne colour with a very subtle shimmer running through it. It adds a very subtle and natural looking glowy radiance to the skin without looking like too much. It's just fantastic.

I'm a sucker for a turquoise blue-y green (a bleen? A grue?) nail polish and this offering from Nails Inc is my absolute favourite. As in I love it so much I've used most of the bottle and will need to repurchase it soon! The colour is B-E-A-U-tiful! A muted sea foam, that I was wearing pretty much constantly throughout the summer. It's just so pretty and the formula's pretty fabulous too. I might actually be in love with it.

Normally I'm more of a lipstick lover but this gloss is actually closer in formula to a high shine liquid lipstick than a gloss. It's been my go to for days when lipstick feels like too much effort. The colour is a deep berry pink that is right in my berry lip loving wheelhouse. It's so pretty but super wearable at the same time. It's also really comfortable and moisturising on the lips, fades down into an even stain and has a really good wear time. It does need to be reapplied after eating and drinking but other than it is fabulous. The only way it could get any better was if it smelt like vanilla, which it does. It's my favourite lipgloss.
Skincare

No7's skincare is fabulous, but this cleanser really takes the cake. It's awesome. It promises 'soft, hydrated and radiantly clean skin' and boy does it deliver. My skin isn't great, incredibly sensitive, sometimes dry and, sadly, riddled with adult acne, but this cleanser is so gentle whilst deeply cleansing the skin, removing all traces of makeup and dirt. These days I have to be so careful with what I put on my skin but this cleanser has been an absolute lifesaver.

nspa Skin Renewal Gel - £7.00 from Asda, available in store, not currently available online

nspa's Skin Renewal Gel is a gel exfoliator that breaks down into an oil once it's been worked into the skin, it contains fruit acids that gently dissolve dead skin cells and dry, flaky skin revealing brighter, softer skin. It's become a staple in my skin care routine because it's oh so gentle - are you beginning to see a pattern? - but it really gets the job done.

Olay Beauty Fluid - £4.99 from olay.co.uk

Olay's Beauty Fluid is a classic, a really lovely, light weight moisturiser that nourishes my skin without irritating it or making it look greasy. I like to use it first thing in the morning because it has a non-greasy texture and is super fast absorbing, making it a perfect base for make up. I love it!

The worst thing about wearing a lot of eye makeup is having to take it off at the end of the day. Enter Balms Away. With a thick, vaseline-like consistency it breaks down even the toughest to remove waterproof mascara in seconds. Amazing.

Garnier Micellar Water - £3.33 (on offer, usually £4.99) for 400ml from boots.com

My mum refers to this as 'posh water' but she loves it really, because it's sooooo good! It removes make up quickly and effortlessly but most importantly it's hypoallergenic and oh so gentle on the skin. It's also cheap as chips. It's great.

Other

John Frieda Frizz Ease Curl Reviver Mousse - £5.89 for 200ml from superdrug.com

John Frieda is a frizz taming god! Mousse has been a staple in my haircare routine since I was 14, when I decided to really embrace the curl and this is one of the best I've come across - the other being Vo5's Smoothly Does It - it's very lightweight, it doesn't drag my hair down but leaves my curls smooth, defined, non-crispy and most importantly frizz free.

Coconut oil is truly a thing of wonder. I like to use this as a hot oil hair treatment and it's fabulous.
I just melt down 1.5 tablespoons of the solid oil and run it through the midlengths and ends of my hair before leaving it for a few hours or overnight. The difference it's made to the condition of my hair is so amazing it might actually be magic.

Garnier Intense 7 Days Restoring Hand Cream for Dry & Chapped Hands - £1.99 (on offer, usually £2.99) for 100ml from superdrug.com

My hands have really not had a good year. Hand washing, hand sanitiser and a recent diagnosis of OCD has left them in terrible condition. Dry, chapped, cracked, bleeding and really sore. Nothing, and I really mean nothing, was making any difference until I got my poor abused paws on a tube of this. It's super hydrating, fast absorbing and is the only cream I've come across that contains a repairing agent that actually does repair the skin and works instantly. I can't be without it.

Lipbalm is something I can't be without and this offering from Burt's Bees is lovely. It tastes and smells exactly like lime starburst which is amazing, but more importantly it is so nourishing on the lips, giving them a much needed burst of hydration. I refuse to go anywhere without it. It's fabulous.

Sorry that was a tad longer and rambler than expected but thanks for sticking with me. What were your favourites from the last year? Review of Last Year & My Goals for 2016

Review of Last Year & My Goals for 2016
Sunday, 3 January 2016
Read post

HAPPY NEW YEAR YOU RIDICULOUSLY GORGEOUS PEOPLE! Sorry I suddenly disappeared at the end of last year, but never mind I'm back now ready to see what a brand new year has in store. But before we get to this year's resolutions let's talk about last year's because there were a few of them.

Just to remind you my resolutions last year were:

1. Take better care of myself.
2. Start Youtubing.
3. Exercise more.
4. Make more friends.
5. Learn to drive.
6. Learn to play guitar.

Normally I start the year brimming with ideas of all the things I want to do and all the different ways I can improve myself and then come February they're all forgotten and I'm plodding along as usual. Well last year was a little bit different.

I didn't manage to start youtubing last year BUT Father Christmas brought me a very fancy (and very beautiful) camera  - a Canon EOS 1200D DSLR if you're interested - for Christmas and once my tripod arrives - and I get organised - I'll be uploading my first video onto the 'tube, so keep an eye out for that towards the end of January. I'll also be booking driving lessons in the new year because I'm running out of excuses and it really is about time that I learn to drive. Nor did I learn to play the guitar, poor Maggie is still sitting in the corner of my room gathering dust. BUT I did start taking better care of myself, I joined Slimming World and lost 1.5 stone (21 pounds to our American friends), I did start going to the gym - going once counts right? - and I did make some new friends and became a lot more sociable. I've still got a long way to go but overall I'm feeling very positive about last year's resolutions

Last year I had a laundry list of New Year's Resolutions (read that post here) some of which I actually managed to stick to, but this year I've decided to keep things simple. This year I want to be healthy and happy and I want to go travelling. That's it.

What are your New Year's Resolutions? How do you feel about last year's? Let me know by commenting below, on twitter or by dropping me an email at lolarocknroses@gmail.com. Also check out my instagram, facebook, bloglovin', snapchat - search lolarocknroses - & pinterest for updates.

September 2015 Favourites

September 2015 Favourites
Sunday, 18 October 2015
Read post
What with my dissertation being due in and being ill, September flew by in a stress filled blur. I'm so glad it's over! Now I can get to the very serious business of enjoying October. Who doesn't love Autumn? With it's crisp, cool mornings, the leaves changing colour and hot chocolate with marshmallows. It's my favourite time of year (read more about that here) but enough about that. Let's talk about my very, very late September favourites shall we?

MAC Matte Lipstick in D is for Danger - £15.50 from MAC

During the dissertation madness I went a bit OTT on the MAC website (haul post to follow) and, somehow, D for Danger found it's merry way into my basket. A  rich berry shade that looks stunning on, is long lasting and absolutely perfect for this time of year, it has quickly become my go to for berry lips, and we all know how much I love a berry lip! The formula does tend towards the drier side of things but it sticks around for hours without needing to be re-applied and is just all kinds of beautiful.

L'Oreal La Palette Nude in Rose - £14.99 from Boots

I was super excited when this was released last year and I think I used it maybe once before it was relegated to the back of the make up drawer in favour of other, more neutral, pallets. But recently I've found myself reaching for it more and more. And I think it's due to the two matte, lilac-y, pink-y, brown shades (on the right in the first picture) and the dusky lilac (centre in the second)

These are a total departure from the silvery, taupey bronzes that I rock on a pretty much daily basis; but they just look so pretty and subtle on the lid. The shadows themselves are lovely: buttery soft, easy to blend and nicely pigmented, with no creasing on the lid. I can see myself getting a lot more use out of this pallet. It's rather fabulous.

No 7 Radiance Boosting Hot Cloth Cleanser - No longer available but No 7 do have a very similar Beautiful Skin Hot Cloth Cleanser for £9.95 at Boots

This cleanser is amazing! I mentioned it a few weeks back in my Weekly Round Up (read it here) and I'm still loving it. I love that it's a hot cloth cleanser. Lying back and resting a hot muslin cloth on my face is just sooooooooo relaaaaaaxing. It feels so luxurious and pampering to just sit back and let the hot cloth work it's magic for 5 minutes.  It thoroughly cleanses the skin whilst still being really gentle, and being hypo-allergenic it's even suitable for those of us with sensitive skin. I really like it.

Real Techniques Duo-Fibre Face Brush - as part of the Nic's Picks Collection, £23.37 from Amazon

I'm actually a big of the entire collection (expect a full review soon) but have been reaching for the Duo-Fibre face brush on a daily basis. It is a dream for applying powder products without looking cakey, it just makes for a really nice light-weight application for a flawless finish. Personally,  I love it for bronzer and contouring because it doesn't pick up too much pigment, so I can really build up ny contour/bronzer when applying, but it's almost impossible to go over the top. Well done Pixiwoo! You've done it again!

Les Misérables - booking information available here

Me, my brother & sister surprised my mum by taking her to see Les Mis as part of her birthday present, and it was incredible! I'd seen it before but it was so  amazing to see it again. Especially because I knew how much my mum wanted to see it and how excited she was. It was incredible the first time I saw it, but it was even better the second time around. I love it, it's such an amazing show. And yes before you ask I spent most of the show in tears, because of course I did!

Sorry this is so late, for some reason I thought I'd already posted this, but obviously not. What were your September Favourites? She asks halfway through October! My Goals for 2015!

My Goals for 2015!
Friday, 2 January 2015
Read post
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I hope everyone has had a fabulous Christmas and New Year. I thought I would kick off 2015 by telling you guys some of my New Years Resolutions. Except I'm not calling them Resolutions because that sounds really scary and I associate that with failure. So instead I'm calling them Goals, which sounds much less frightening and way more manageable.

At the start of every year I make hundreds of New Year's Resolutions & every year, without fail, I'll have forgotten half of them before February rolls around. This year I thought I'd post them for all you lovely people to see for a little accountability, which means that if I fail people are gonna know about it so I'd better try a bit harder.

Now I'm not gonna post all of my resolutions goals on here, because I have quite a few and some of them are quite personal, but I thought I would post the ones I really, really want to do and don't mind people knowing about. Let's do this.

Take better care of myself.

For those of you who watch New Girl, I have recently learnt that Nick Miller is my spirit animal. I am a female Nick, which is both funny and a little bit sad. I eat really bad food, and that's when I can be bothered to eat, most of the time I exist on coke (the soft drink, not the illegal substance), which is beyond bad for you and I will definitely be giving that up in the new year. I don't have good sleeping habits and I don't really get a lot of sleep. Case in point as I write this it is 01:05 am in the morning I have to be up in less than 6 hours, which is the minimum amount of sleep I require to function like a human and I am not even close to being sleepy yet. Basically my life can be summed up perfectly in this quote: 'I'm not a successful adult! I don't eat vegetables and/or take care of myself!' Yep, that's me...definitely need to change that.

Start Youtubing.

This is something I've wanted to do for ages but it's definitely going to have to go on the backburner for at least the first half of the year while I finish my degree and also save up for a decent camera. At the moment I take all my photos for my blog on my phone, which is fine, but you can't really make good quality videos with it. I do have a camera but I got it when I was 16 (which is 7 years ago now... gulp!) and the picture quality is shocking. But yeah I definitely hope to be youtubing by the end of 2015. I have a lot of ideas too and I'm really excited by the prospect so definitely keep an eye out for that!

Exercise More

I am a human sloth! When I'm at uni I walk everywhere which is good but other than that nothing. So because I want to start taking proper care of myself like a proper adult I definitely need to partake in some exercise. If anyone has any tips or hints on this then help a sister out and comment them down below because exercise is not at all my forte. Sleeping all day however that I can do.

Make more friends

Okay so this sounds a little bit strange and more than a little sad so let me give you some context. I'm doing a postgraduate degree at the same uni where I did my undergrad. During my BA I had a really good social life and I had some amazing friends who I saw everyday.

Proof that I do have actual real friends... they're not gonna be happy about this :S

Now that we've graduated everyone's scattered and gone their separate ways so I don't see them very much. Some of my closest friends are spread across Newcastle, Nottingham, Eastbourne and Surrey and I split my time between Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire so they're not exactly local. Now I feel kinda like the person who stayed a bit too long at the party and it's really awkward. While I do still have one or two friends here and my housemates are lovely it's not the same. So I definitely need to branch out and try meeting some new people. The only problem is I am incredibly socially awkward at the best of times, couple that with the fact that I'm a bit of a hermit with one hell of a bitch face and I am terrified. Out of all of my goals this is probably the scariest, it's going to be a challenge. Making friends when you are over the age of 5 is a genuinely, terrifying prospect. Eeeeeeek! Wish me luck.

Learn to Drive

Driving is something I have really struggled with. I started lessons when I was 17 until I couldn't afford it anymore. I tried again after my 20th birthday but then there was an incident in my first lesson where I had to make a left turn and stalled, a really nice lady braked so I could turn and then this idiot overtook her and I had to emergency break. It sounds really silly but it really shook me up and I lost my confidence so I gave up. I would really like to get over that hump this year. Driving would make my life so much easier.

Learn to Play Guitar

I've had my guitar, Maggie, since I was 10 and I can play some chords but other than that she's pretty much just sat in the corner gathering dust, poor thing! So I'd like to be able to play a song, and it actually sound like that song, by the end of the year.

So those are my New Years Resolutions. What are yours? Let me know on twitter, by commenting below or even by dropping me an email lolarocknroses@gmail.com. Also, if you feel like it, check out my instagram, facebook, Bloglovin & pinterest and give me a cheeky follow.

Happy New Year! xxx
